I have 2001 93 convertible, 2.0t and the front alloys get covered in brake dust very quickly.

Is this due to my braking habits or the brakes themselves or something else?

The OEM pads may well be very dusty by nature. The same happens with my Focus, but it's a given that Ford pads produce a lot of dust

Some makes/models of pad are dustier than others but it's normal for alloys to get brake dust on them, it's just one of those things I'm afraid.

It's usually down to brake pad material, it's what wears the most compared to the actual disc. If you brake more you'll dump more dust on the wheels, the amount of dust can vary from pad to pad, have a look on forums about your car and there's usually a discussion on various pads and dust levels.

Ok, fair enough. It just irks me a bit that in a month of driving the 7 miles to work everyday leaves the front alloys essentially black due to dust cover. :D

As mentioned, dust amount can depend on the pad and obviously on how the car is driven.
There are some particularly nasty types moaned about on the MLR when the pads get so hot, it flicks metal filings into the paintwork :o

Easiest way is to get new pads, or alter your driving style. Or you can alleviate things by doing a good thorough wheel wash with wonder wheels (wheels off works best - I last did mine when I removed my front calipers). Then I usually apply a couple of layers of Collinite and/or maybe a wheel sealant. This process makes getting future dust off, much, much easier.

I have to admit, getting the dust off isn't too much of a hassle, it usually comes off pretty easily. I was just concerned that it might be problem, but it seems normal so I won't worry about it. Thanks all.

Use a harsh product like Wonder Wheels once, then protect them with something like Poorboys Wheel sealants 2 or 3 applications. Brake dust falls off so easily even with a dry finger. Top it up with a coat or two every 2/3 months and never have to spend more time cleaning them than necessary.
