News of the World to close down

mods feel free to merge thread with the other one, I would suggest that this is newsworthy in its own right and has a different angle to the Milly Dowler case

Yes but the Milly Dowler thread isn't really talking about that anymore, it covers everything.

Maybe the threads could be merged and that one renamed?

Essentially no one who currently works at News of the World probably had something to do with the phone hacking.

Murdoch has sacrificed a chunk of British history (and for the most part, the NotW was a British tabloid in the noble sense - the Pakistan cricket betting scandal the most resent good example) and the careers of many to save, seemingly, Rebekah Brooks.

Such a shame (sarcasm). Serves them right for what they did!

My only sympathy is to the employee's who have lost there jobs and haven't done anything wrong.

Wow big news. Now if only they'd take the Sun and the Mail down too..

Still, closing the NotW is a pointless step, and will probably help obfuscate matters when it comes to actually clearing things up and bringing certain parties to justice, and needlessly punishes a lot of innocent current employees. So Murdoch pulls off a "grace saving" stunt, fires the ordinary workers and keeps the executives on, presumably faffing around the Sun. Great.

Lets face it, no one is as much about the bottom line as Murdoch is. The paper wouldn't have been shut down if so many high profile sponsors hadn't distanced themselves from it.

Yeah why don't we just shut down the whole press while we're at it (except your favorite paper, of course :rolleyes::rolleyes:)
Oh dear, a Mail fan are we?

Not so fast, Mr-Jump-To-Conclusions. I read the Financial Times as my daily, Guardian Online as my hourly, and on occasion The Times on the iPad.

I wasn't roll-eyesing because I like or read the Daily Mail. I was roll-eyesing at the blind stupidity of the remark.

Just because a certain paper does not align with your own prejudices doesn't mean it should be shut down.

Free press.

That's what I was saying in the Milly thread. Ford's decision to distance themselves was nothing but an empty shallow gesture as they're still advertising with other Murdoch ventures. If other advertisers are deciding to follow Ford and with distribution moving to digital sales, this is the perfect chance to pull the plug on the paper.

Choice...

I'm surprised, mr-doesn't-jump-to-conclusions that someone so well read missed a tongue in cheek comment. Nevermind!

Ah, I haven't read that thread much ;).

Sky News says 200 staff to be aid off from NOTW - most of whom had nothing to do with recent events, and are relatively new staff. Yet the woman who was the orchestrator of the phone hacking gets to keep her cushy job. Nice.
