2 x GTX560 Ti (SLi) or 1 x GTX580

IMO the OP has hit the correct time to upgrade. Specifically when he needs to! A game he plays is suffering on his current setup. Thats the right time to upgrade. NOT for a forthcoming game or to future proof! Thats a bad idea.

Go fo it! A move to a 5 series GPU will be a big jump in performance! Enjoy!

got to agree with this

Except that I don't think the issue that the OP is facing is due to the GTX260 being not fast enough (the problem is "stutters and hangs", not low frame rate), but probably due to driver issue or issue with the game itself.
The GTX260SLI can run the game highest settings at 1920 res constant at 60fps with vsync:
so I can't imagine a single GTX260 will really struggle too much in that game.

Before you opening up you wallet for new graphic cards, have you tried to check if you can fix the problems you are having with the game?
a) Is the game up-to-date with the latest patch?
b) Have you try using a different graphic driver?
c) Is your graphic card overheating? When's the last time you cleaned it? Are you sure there's no dust trapped in the cooler/on the heatsink?

I have the latest drivers, well June, haven't check for a couple of weeks, and the game has all the patches, well , it updated istself after intalling, hasn't prompted for any more.

Crisis 2 played with my normal OC and no crashes or hangs, i'm not convinced totally that it's my PC at fault, but it's coming up to 5 years old, when I usually replace my rig, so it was good to come and check out what's about, what's coming and start putting out feelers for my next big upgrade.

2x1 Gb GTX 560 Ti are way better than a single GTX 580 and will last a lot longer. If both setups cost the same, then there is no reason to get the latter unless you are going by incorrect, long out of date rumors and hearsay about multiple GPU setups.

Vram is also far too over rated. 2 decent branded GTX 560s in SLI are also 100% silent (and quieter than a single high end card), and far cooler than even the ATI 5770s were. More reasons why they make a solid choice to go for.

Although there are none on OCuk, if you shop around you can find the 2gb 560 for about £190, otherwise I'd give the 1gb cards a miss and get the 580. More and more games are being released that require more than 1gb of Vram at max settings (and the number is set to rise), so if you intend to keep this setup for a while I'd definitely get 1.5/2gb of Vram

The 5970 isn't produced anymore. The AMD 6xxx series has better crossfire scaling and tessellation performance than the 5xxx cards.

can someone explain this slide to me please http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_580/27.html

The one that beats it is an HD 5970, do they even exist? not one eTailor i have visited has one for sale?
5970 certainly does exist. It is a single card that has two 5870 GPUs (but downclocked from 850MHz to 725Mhz) on it...in another word, it 5870 (downclocked) crossfired within the single card itself.

While by number it doesn't beat GTX580, the problem with crossfire is that there's are still risk of potential issues such as poor scaling in some games, crossfire drivers having problem, or getting stuttering in games.

Don't think people would still get 5970 now, as getting a single GPU card such as the GTX580 and overclock it would be much simpler, more reliable and have much lower chance of running into problems.

This all seems rather complicated and one would assume deliberately by the manufacturers for some reason I guess.

a brief look shows 6770's better than 6790's so the numbering doesn't seem to mean anything.

It also seems the 6770's are much more powerful than the GTX 560's is that the case?

Not sure on the ATI 67XX series, but i doubt they are faster than a 560! It all gets a bit confusing in the mid-range TBH. IMO you need to focus on the following.

ATI
58X0 or 69X0

NV
4X0 or 5X0

And now the cheap 480's are hard to come by, i'd go for 69X0 or 5X0. ;)

6790 :- Core: 840MHz, Memory: 1024MB 4200MHz GDDR5, Stream Processors: 800
6770 :- Core: 850MHz, Memory: 1024MB 4800MHz GDDR5, Stream Processors: 800

seems to me if you can read english the numbers speak for themselves.

If you have nothing nice to say and just came to insult people, please do me a favour and NEVER, EVER reply to ANY of my threads again , you are obnoxious and not welcome!

hmm, you made me wonder if i might as well wait for Maxwell!

I have 2 gtx280's running SLI atm and I' am waiting for the next generation to come around the corner :-) both play BFBC2 great at the moment, one struggles with at high resolution. cant wait for BFBC3 and my new GPU :-)

After being away from the forum for a long while, I assume you have no idea about vram usage of modern games right?

Here are the results of Metro 2033 official benchmark, making a record of the rendering time of each frame, which is different from most other benchmarks making only a record of the average fps over each second failing to present lag spike problems.
