Since when has YouTube had 3D abilities on random videos? I was finding this video to send to a friend to go with the quote in the thread title and noticed it looked weird, so I looked and YouTube 3D was enabled!? I took it off and it's back to normal.

Since when, and more importantly why, is YouTube offering 3D on random old videos of things like the Simpsons!?

Becuase 3d is becoming more standard, surprised how many digital cameras are now 3d enabled.

Only it isn't. Article in the Telegraph yesterday about how it's not getting the uptake that was thought and there's a belief that it isn't going to become the standard.
I can type it up/link to it later.

3D Isn't going anywhere until we find a new technology to use it without the need for external 3D equipment (i.e. 3D glasses).
As said above there has been a few articles on this.

The version of 3D we use now (stereoscopic) is pretty crap and has quite a few downfalls - its only when you start looking at holographic 3D that you can see where the tech will eventually go. What we have now is just a tangent, like Betamax :p

ps3ud0

People said the same with hd, that the uptake was slow. It'll take a fair few years. But it will come more and more popular.
The biggest trouble is a lot of people handnt upgraded to LCD, so changed straight from CRT to HD. Most people now have new TVs so it's going to be a few years before the next round of major upgrades for the normal person.

That's what I've always though too. I always consider it more of a gimmick than anything else.

It's like so many other things that make interesting additions, but aren't necessarily wanted or needed by the general population.

For example, I like 3D, but only in specific circumstances. I thought it added a fantastic indulging element to Jackass 3D, but thought it was a waste of time in the likes of Toy Story.

Maybe in the future when it's (As stated) usable without any user based equipment and the headaches or other odd things associated with the concept (Nintendo 3Ds), it might be a wider used idea, but currently I can't honestly say I've seen it develop since it first became available in my local cinema.

3D is the massive con mostly aimed at either getting more people in the cinema or more people to buy new TVs.

In the olden days when we had CRT TVs they lasted many many years and you got a new TV only when your old one died. Then they got us to by LCD Tvs for "high definition" before any real HD content was available. Now we have some HD content but a lot of it is simply up-scaled SD content.

Same will apply to 3D. Just like a lot of the 3D is badly added in at a post production stage. Paying to see a "3D" film that is all done in post production is a rip-off.

Unabashed capitalism at work. BUY MORE THINGS.

Of course the majority of Sky subscribers with their 50" wall-mounted screens will be biting at the bit to buy the same TV just with "3D" and then pay dues to Sky for a 3D subscription.

Rant ove.

And yet, neither are as good as double D's!

Ahh a real life set of DDs. Nothing better and in Real 3D too! :D

It's neither a gimmick nor a con, it's just like any other technology, in its early stages and is still to be improved. Thus at the moment the tech isn't really catching on much because it's so undeveloped.
You could potentially say HD TV is a con because there are few channels which actually are HD, and many people still use DVD.

As I said above we still don't really have a lot of true HD content. 3D will be worse.

A lot of stuff is now hd, but also that the format is standard and is in most households. Everything takes time. Especially when you have limited air space for free to air tv. Most new series are filmed in hd, you just have to remember how much stuff is repeats, which skewes the figures. Blu-ray is now very much standard.

People have been saying since the start it's a gimmick and will die. It isn't, it's here to stay with massive backing and is infiltrating the Market. Just like hd it will take along time. But it's here.

Errrm well you obviously have to sell HDTV's before you have much HD content as you need to create the market. People buy TV's as long term investments knowing that it will be "future proof" and it has paid off. There are Loads of HD channels. Blue rays and HD gaming.

Been out for a few years (July 2009):

Totally disagree, I go to the cinema quite a bit, and I have never had a good 3D experience, not even at Piranha 3D! :p

I second what Mark Kermode says:

Then do this:

Until you get true glasses free proper 3D it is a con and a gimmick. Who is going to sit at home wearing dorky glasses? Early adopters are also likely to get screwed over on standards (look at the HD vs True HD mess)

True there are moe actually HD programs. There are also a lot of proprgams upscalled and sold as HD. Never-mind the problem with compression of cable, Sky and Freesat/view programs.

Blu-ray and HD gaming are probably the best uses of HD at the moment and also give the best picture. I'd bet most people have badly compressed HD streams from Sky et al because "well it;s in HD and the man in the shop said it is better"

As for the TV being a long term investment, well that's what TV makers are trying to get us out of by adding pointless functionality like "smart" TVs.

I expected my views to be in the majority! :D
