"I see you've played Knifey Spooney before" - YouTube 3D?

I hate cinema in 3D mainly due to the glasses being usually scraped or dirty...

This was in the Telegraph yesterday. It doesn't really come down on either side and it would be interesting if there was a comparison with HD for example. However, it's interesting nonetheless and I think that he ultimately decides that the public just aren't as interested and passionate as the industry. I believe that it's a fad.

It began with a bang 18 months ago, but Hollywood's 3D honeymoon may already be over as audiences ditch the glasses and opt to watch films the old way.
When Avatar was released in 2009, about 80% of cinema-goers chose to see it using new technology, helping it to make it the biggest grossing film ever. But the proportion of US audiences that have chosen to experience the latest blockbusters in 3D has fallen sharply.
Only 38% of the US box office take for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides came from 3D tickets. Among other big budget Hollywood offerings, Green Lantern, Cars 2 and Kung Fu Panda 2 all took 45% or less of their receipts from 3D sales.
The souring public reception is explained by factors including ticket prices, which are almost 50% higher. Audiences have also been disillusioned by a rash of films that were hurriedly and badly converted to the technology, while other viewers have been made unwell by the effects. The American Association of Optometrists found as many as a quarter of people reported eye strain, dizziness, headaches or nausea.
Sales of 3D television sets have also stalled. In Britain, only 125,000 households bought one last year, while in American just 1.1 million sets were sold.
Analysts have said that, while broadcasters and electronics manufacturers are investing heavily in the new technology, the public is not engaging with it.
In Hollywood, leading film-makers including George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, have eagerly embraced 3D and dozens of films are already lined up for the next few years.
Studio executives continue to talk up a revolution on par with the advent of colour, but the audience reaction has sent jitters through the industry.
Ahead of the release of this summer's Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the Director, Michael Bay, wrote to cinema projectionists asking them not to skimp on bulbs to save money and "counter the recent trend of audiences being underwhelmed by 'dark dingy-looking 3D'". He added: "we are all in this together. Let's make the audience believe again."
As a result, 60% of the US box office at the opening came from 3D although critics pointed out that it was not as widely available in 2D as previous films.
There is a bright spot for Hollywood. In Europe, 80% of the audiences chose to see the recent release Thor in 3D.
Those who have invested in the technology deny that the public is losing interest. They blame the large number of productions competing for a finite number of upgraded screens.

3D is being shoved down our throats because LCD's have now saturated the market and most people keep a TV for a good few years. Also, Blu-Ray isn't taking off that well because streaming HD video is now an option for a lot of people. That means Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, etc, are crapping their pants and need to shift more boxes. Enter 3D! Next it will be 3D+ then Super 3D, then 3D Turbo, blah, blah....all so we feel compelled to upgrade our TV every year or two.

Eurgh! I would not consider streaming HD in the same ballpark as the quality you get on BD - Id actually argue that your point is ill-founded and that BD adoption is greater than streaming HD...

ps3ud0

Exactly like HD (720p) then True HD (1080p) so we will get 3D and then Super-3D.

Streaming content never-mind HD content is what people are after nowadays. The days of sitting in-front of the boob-tube are going to become a dying art soon.

That's what bothers people that make these things. They are running out of reasons to get us to buy new gear hence they add gimmicks like 3D.

Hd streaming isn't really hd, very few hd streams are at 1080p a lot isn't even 720.

I dunno. iTunes streams 720p content to my Apple TV just fine. However I'm perfectly happy with SD content that way as long as it is delivered in a way I want at a time I want.

As someone mentioned earlier HD works best for games at the moment and i believe it's the same for 3D. There are some great games out there in 3D with more coming out, Killzone 3 looks amazing in 3D (still a few sketchy moments).

The Telegraph article is good and agreed it points out that it's the industry that is a lot more passionate than the general user. The other people that are passionate about it are technology geeks who have chosen that path, many of them will play games and when the prices are lower on the TV's there will be a good collection of games out there to get already.

I am a 3D TV owner myself and rarely use it in 3D, i do like the imitation 3D you can turn on which works with most programs (not cartoons etc obviously). I do think when they have worked out the problems with the 3D TV's without using glasses there will be more in peoples homes. At the moment though you have to look at those TV's within certain parameters (ceratain angles) so wouldn't be good as a family TV if all wanted to watch 3D.

You're right, and even then they claim it to be 720p or 1080p streaming but the bit rate is of standard definition (or a bit higher), they say that using a different codec is the reason why the bitrate is less.

Also internet connections in this country are not fast enough to stream true HD content via the internet. Unless you got 50mb+ connection

I think 50mbit is sufficient for true Hd content and the same with 100mbit.

I got 50+ and have a love film account. Yet there stream isn't even hd of any description. Also now buy films exclusively online and yet iTunes is my only option and that's not even blurry quality :( and DRM. Why can't someone give me what I want, I'm willing to pay FFS.
Love film will be canceled within a few weeks.

Depends what your definition of true hd is, streamed, leaked/pirated, blueray or hd-dvd it's all compressed in some form or another.

50Mb is over twice as much as you realistically need.

To get blu-ray quality you would need at least 50mb connection.

Most blu-rays will have a birate of anywhere from 20mbps to 50mbps

Considering that your actual useable download speed is just over 10% of the quoted figure, You do need a fast internet connection, even with fancy codecs.

There are many places that can give you what you want, but not exactly 100% legal, but who cares! It's not as if your isp can break ssl with a flick of a switch.

Am i the only person that HATES 3D it gives me horrible headaches and makes me feel ill.

Nope.

3D hurts my brains because it tricks you into thinking the scene is 3D but then only has one part of the scene in focus.
If you try and look at an out of focus bit your brain/eyes try to bring it into focus but obviously can't, which leads to brain/eye hurts. :(
