Will the Daily Fail go the way of the News of the Screws?

The Daily Fail has been remarkably quiet about the hacking scandal; perhaps because they were identified by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) as being just as deep down in the sewage of hacking as the News of the Screws. Steve Coogan alluded to this on Newsnight yesterday as is mentioned by Alistair Campbell on his blog.

Incidentally, if you didn't see Steve Coogan and Greg Dyke rip into the odious and self-publicsing Paul McMullen on Newsnight last night you should get onto iPlayer ASAP!

I might be in the minority here, but anyone else wish he'd type the newspapers' actual names every once in a while? It made me chuckle the first time but now I don't see the point any more :(

AAARGH!!

Stockhausen, there is something to be discussed here, but no one is going to take you seriously when you always change the names.

Personally, i have never had a problem with your posts except for this. You would save yourself a lot of grief if you stopped this. It's the main reason the Milly Dowler thread went off track! Another serious issue which should have been handled with a bit more respect tbh.

Anyway, i saw Newsnight last night. Surely McMullen can't be serious. He is like some pantomime villain, he must be doing it on purpose. At one point it looked like Steve Coogan as really going to lose his tempre with him.

I thought they seemed quite quiet over it too, this is a huge story and they put the royal visit to Canada well above it on their website.

I'll bet that ALL newspapers have had illegal dealings of this nature in one way or another.

Not a chance.

They all have dealing thoughs, the only differentiator being the legality of those dealings. They all need each other, the Police, MP's and the media.

Knowing how the NoTW have operated, I am sure they would have exposed wrong doings at other papers this week if that had any dirt.

While it would make little difference to my reading habits if the Daily Mail ceased to exist on another level it would be a bit of a shame - people do enjoy reading it (for reasons that I can't fully explain) so they probably should be catered for. Another option of course being that an alternative existing newspaper is "dragged down" to fill the void left by the disappearance of the NoTW or the Daily Mail should that come to pass - there's an argument for keeping this type of kneejerk reactionary press where you can see it anyway rather than have it seep into other papers.

The only real reason they have canned it is because they wanted to. If they wanted the paper to remain in circulation, they would have sacked half a dozen people, and left it at that.

I think stockhausen will only be happy when the Socialist Worker and Guardian are the only newspapers available in the UK...
