Best Andriod phone?

I've had a Samsung Galaxy S since November and I've got about 18months left on my contract.

I'm being offered a new one through work - can be anything but I'll just continue to use my current contract.

I like how Andriod syncs with everything (my Gmail, my calendar, my Google Docs etc.....) so I'd like to stay Andriod.

So what's the best Andriod phone out at the moment?

Samsung Galaxy S 2 or something else?

Done then, I'll tell them to get me one of them :D

What's my Galaxy S worth? 6 months of use, I've thrown the box I think so it's just the phone and charger. Very good condition?

The Galaxy S II is the best Android phone, I don't think that can be disputed on the whole.

It depends what you want from a phone really. If I were looking to upgrade my Nexus S then I'd be drawn toward the Sensation by it's higher res screen, or maybe the Optimus 3D because of the GPU power it packs and the 3D would be something funky to play around with.

The SGS2 whilst a lovely handset, doesn't have a USP really.

The USP is that it improves on everything, rather than just one feature.

That usually turns out better than one 'new and awesome' feature that never gets used, like 3D, or one with little to no real benefit, like the qHD display.

what other android phone has a RGB striped SAMOLED+ 4.3" screen, support for MKV playback, a GPU Accelerated UI for silky smoothness, slimmest and lightest handset, best 1080p Video camera, Most powerful GPU?

Isn't that enough USP's?

Well the Optimus has an LCD screen, so that isn't going to be pentile, same deal with the Sensation. MKV playback, surely that's something that any of the devices is capable of with the correct software? I don't know, I've no interest in watching films on a phone! Slimmest and lightest - OK have def got to give it that. Best video camera.. higher pixel count per sensor, but it only has the one - a 3D camera interests me more than a higher MP 2D camera. You need to remember that a higher pixel count != better camera.

Most powerful GPU... I disagree here. The Adreno 220 is better, as is the SGX540 (clocked up to 300mhz and with new drviers). The Mali-400MP comes in 3rd. Of course any of them are plenty quick enough.

With regards to the GPU accelerated UI, I'll admit with single core lower clocked phones this would be an issue - but all 3 of the phones I listed then the CPU is more than capable of handling the UI without any help from the GPU. With the the SGS2 it is only the touchwiz overlay that is accelerated, so if you were to mess around and not use it - bam, there goes the acceleration.

As I said early, it all comes to what you want / expect from a phone and imo the 3 I listed are the best current Android phones. There is no outright winner, there is no 'BEST' - it's down to what is best for you.

GeX - You seemed to be very misinformed - SGS2 does not have a Pentile display - its RGB striped like i said.

MKV needs codec and gpu acceleration support which cannot be added later via software.

You need to remember that a higher pixel count != better camera. - very true - my comment was made for the actual quality i.e. sharpness, smoothness, colour, light metering etc. SGS2 is the current best here.

I remember SARGE78 saying Mali-400 is the most powerul GPU.
SGS (SGX 540) = 3-5 GFLOPS
HTC Sensation (Adreno 220) = 3-6 GFLOPS
SGS2 (Mali 400) = 8-10 GFLOPS

GPU accelerated UI is not only in the touchwiz overlay it's everywhere from the market to the phone book. I'm using go launcher and go sms and its still smooth as silk. And so was the 3d app drawer on launcher pro.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in what I was saying. I meant that neither of the two are pentile screens, so the fact that the SGS2 doesn't use pentile either isn't a massive feature. I do, however, much prefer the screen on SGS2 over the two. I've always prefered AMOLED over LCD.

Fair point about the MKV support, as I said - it's not something that bothers me, so it isn't something I've paid too much attention to.

Your performance figures aren't really accurate or relevant, for starters you cannot compare the SGS to the Optimus 3D GPUs like that. Yes, they are the same chip but one is clocked at 200mhz and the other at 300mhz - and the drivers on the 3D are muchly improved. Where is your source for the Mali 400, as that seems greatly inflated.

I've looked into the GPU acceleration on the UI a bit more now, and it is the compositor that is accelerated on the SGS2. However, this is a feature of Gingerbread and the Sensation will do the same thing - as will the Optimus 3D shortly!

I fear you've missed my point though, that there is no best phone - it's down to the individual to pick the phone that suits their needs/wants. :)

My points were all answers to your 'The SGS2 whilst a lovely handset, doesn't have a USP really' comment.

The non-pentile samled+ is a USP and so are all my other points.

I'm hoping sarge78 will come along here and clear up the info about the gpu stats as he seems to know a bit about them.

UI has been beefed up to 60fps on gingerbread but that is different to GPU acceleration. SGS2 is the only Anrdoid to have it. The sensation does not have it and it can be seen here how it stutters in the maket, browser, homescreen etc when scrolling - SGS2 browser is also GPU accelerated making it very fast and smooth.

I never disputed that. :)
