I love you mate

I used to have a Chinese friend online, and she would tell me off for saying 'hi mate' because we were not mates.

Suppose it must sound quite odd to people who are not used to it.

My Chinese friend got really ****ed when I greeted him with a "herrow" :)

Indeed, I just mean it's a very strange evolution of the usage of the word.

It has nothing to do with 'mating' it it just a anglicanism of the Dutch word 'Maat' which means friend.

It transfered into the anglo-dutch word 'Mate' in South Africa and Afrikaans over to the Victorians and so is simply another word spread and changed by the British Empire from one of it's colonies.

If you say so mate.

I used to think this when I was younger, up untill about 16 when I just gave in and started using the word to refer to friends. I dont get it either :P

edit

should have read castiels post, wish someone would have told me that earlier! Infact when I asked people at the time they had no clue!

"Would/should have" needs to be made a criminal offense, punishable by many years in prison/Guantanamo Bay.
