Indicating on motorways and what it means.

Actually you should indicate according to the circumstances, and other drives don't need to be telepathic to understand closing speed. A good intuitive driver (one who understands closing speeds) should be able to tell when another car is likely to need to change lanes and react accordingly (I get many hand waves to thank me for reacting to their likely needs on motorways).

If I am in lane 1 and am approaching a car in front and I can see the guy in lane 2 is approaching me over the speed limit and is not taking account of my closing speed in lane 1, I will indicate to make him move into lane 3. (he may sometimes actually do that if he isn't driving an Audi or VW :D )

If it is heavy traffic and I wish to change lanes to improve my progress, I will indicate to see if anyone will let me out, but I won't then use it to bully my way out.

But other times you are likely to scare people into thinking you are just going to move, especially if you have another driver just off your rear quarter as Flukester said. As a biker I always do a life saver in my car as well.

The fact is you cannot have one blanket rule you have to react to the circumstances, conditions etc and treat everyone like an idiot.

So many drivers are selfish and counter bad behaviour with more bad behaviour and this perpetuates and snowballs until we have the "free for all" on roads we have today.

I don't get this, "Sit with indicator on waiting for gap" thing either.

I use my mirrors to look for a gap and when one opens up I indicate to show I'm going to be moving into said gap.

Isn't this how it's meant to be done?

If someone is sitting there with their indicator on you really don't know when they are about to make that move, You see one guy go past and they haven't moved does that mean I can pass safely or am I forced to slow and let them in? Simply because I fear they will move into my path anyway. It's just not the right thing to do.

Then you should have fore seen the issue and moved out earlier, or you are simply in traffic and not on a fast moving motorway.

I've never had to wait long for a gap when traffic is flowing at a decent pace.

Yup. Mirror, blind spot, signal, manoeuvre. If steps #1 or #2 indicates no gap, wait some seconds and try again.

I stay in lane 3 and move into 2 when I see a porche coming - I think it's much safer because it removes you from most of the lane-changing shenanigans and because people consider it to be the fast lane you get there quicker and spend less time on the motorway.

The idea/hope is that someone will let you out of an otherwise difficult to leave lane. If I see someone in a decent car that is indicating with lights or attitude that they want to join my lane, assuming I am not going considerably faster, I will flash them out.

It's a decision process based on experience. If I flash a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG out, chances are he or she will get a move on and not hold me up unnecessarily. If I flash a Volkswagen Polo Bluemotion out, chances are I'm going to need another shave by the time I eventually get by.

Ah, I see that I am approaching a slow moving vehicle, check gaps but there are none. Now what?

You don't indicate, You nailed it upto 88mph and boom you are at your destination at the time you want.

Can't even be bothered with you two. I will do it the correct way and let you continue to do it the incorrect way ;)

Not worth my time and effort is it.
