Do you use Google when you can't remember things?

I had a conversation with a mate earlier where we were talking about movies. We were discussing movies that we have seen and i suddenly thought of a film i saw some time ago, but i could not remember it's name. I could remember the star but not the title of the movie.

He said he would just Google the actor to find out, but i said not to, as i should be able to remember it really. In the end, i did remember it (about 15 minutes later) but it got me thinking. Does anyone else do this in situations where you are trying to remember some detail, or do you just go straight to Google/whatever?

It is very tempting to just fall back on the interweb for all your info, but i ususally prefer to have a think for a while, the info is in your head after all!

Obviously if i really needed the information quickly i would just go to google straight away if i couldn't think of it, but if it is something trivial then i will at least give it a good while trying to remember it myself. I am only 26, i should be able to remember it eventually:p

The problem is that if you're focused on trying to remember something, other recollections will become associated with that process - they'll sear into your neuron pathways and you'll have as much or more trouble remembering next time, whereas if yuo pull the information straight up, the direct recollection will become stronger and you'll find it easier to remember next time.

This could all be complete ********, of course. I don't know. but the practice served me well during revision times - I didn't sit there and struggle to remember something, I looked it up when I hit a block and found myself hitting those blocks less and less often.

Of course, but don't you ever feel that you should really be able to remember on your own?
I find that i almost see it as a defeat when i have to search for something that i already know, but just can't remember:D.

a combination of blowing away brain cells on a saturday night and taking on more information daily makes it harder to reach into the archives of my memory and retrieve stuff.

Yep, because those 15 minutes spent trying to remember something obscure could be used doing something significantly more important. Such as playing with myself.

Weird, I was discussing this the other day.

We we're talking about the issues this may throw up for future generations. If you don't "have" to pull up information then will it affect the minds ability to do so further down the line. The mind, after all, is very much like the other organs in your body, it can be strengthened, it degrades, it can be exercised to maintain it.

Will Google damage the human race's long term memory capability?

Google is like a library, only better. No shame in gooling, 12+ years ago if you didn't know an answer or couldn't remember you either never found out or had to trek to a local uni reference library or worse wait a week for an inter library loan.

I use Google daily
