I love gaming but

Play more online only portions of games, lot more fun especialy so with mates over voice comms, couple of hours flys by...

If i play a single player game it's usualy just from a couple i have installed at any one time, Witcher 2, fallout 3 etc..

Tend to find now though after so many years gaming that a lot of single player games are in the bracket of "I've seen that and done it already" which soon puts me off playing them... :(

My problem is actually playing anything at all.

When I play, I like to do at least a 3 hour stint. Easy to do when single or not living with your gf as you will have multiple free evenings to do as you please.

Living with your gf/wife sees this time drop off, and I struggle to find time to properly "bed in" to a game.

Managed to finish ME2, but only about 80% through the story of Batman AA, having an untouched Witcher 2 crying for attention, and Arkahm City and HOMM6 on the horizon, I'm worried about actually getting to play anything, lol.

Gaming Addiction, is real. You are prob, looking for another gaming fix..

These days many new games have been watered down to suit multiple platforms upon release or to somehow are designed to appeal to the wider? audience of casual gamers. Publishers maybe cashing in, but they can only do that for so long before the greater public wise up and stop supporting rubish titles.

I can see why gamers looking for the next addictive fix, will be annoyed with the almost, reverse engineering going on in games development.

Its become less about the mechanics and permutations and possibilties of what one can do in a game world, and more about, scripted linear story telling expensive graphics and sound with some random button bashing to perform another scripted quicktime event thrown in for good measure. These games arn't addictive, althought they may be entertaining.

So what are the most addictive game Genre's ?

IMO = MMOFPS / MMORPG / MMORTS

The two main ingredients is stratergy and choice, methinks.... Without them there is little hope for new gaming experiences.

yes COD is the problem here, these game are more like movie's then games now, like blops with the 'chair scenes' got a bit OTT :( WHAT ARE THESE NUMBERS!?! is burnt into me now :o

Same thing has been happening to me for the last 2/3 years. I just think it's because I've gotten a little older and have become used to spending most of my day just surfing the internet.

I remember sitting behind the couch as a child playing on my Gameboy from the moment I got home from school until bed time. :(

I go through phases of real binging I guess, get bored then quit and move on to something else. I've rarely finished any game I've got, not got the time or patience to get good at online games so generally finish the single player then move on. I need games that give me instant rewards then carrots of something better in the future. MMO's are the classic example, Rift and LOTRO have been 2 I raced to max level, started on the grind for raiding and got bored then moved on.

My weakness I have come to realise is the Diablo/Titan Quest/Action style RPG. It's the click - kill stuff - pick up loot - kill more stuff - get better loot - do it all again cycle that keeps me playing. The plus side is of course that you can dip in and out and spend as little or as much time as you have, and for some reason I have no problem in killing the same boss over and over again to get better stuff :D

My advice is to find a genre you're into and explore games within the genre.

Come on Diablo 3 :D

I had this problem until I got a joystick.

If you could call it that, my "main" game was UT 2004, but I would play other games such as company of heroes for my ww2 curiosity, counter strike source for the sheer "one more go" buzz and left 4 dead to release stress by ploughing through undead hordes.

Now I play a lot of flight simulators, something I never thought I would be into, always deeming them too complicated or simply too boring. How wrong I was - I now ADORE flight simulator x which has become my main game, and I LOVE il2 1946, again satisfying my ww2 curiosity.

Sadly the genre had its hey day a long time ago, and new releases are few and far between and when they do arrive, often in a broken state (like the new il2).

My advice, if you have any latent flying desire at all, I think this goes for all humans though - get a joystick. I bought a thrustmaster t flight hotas x for £30 and this is enough to play these games at the highest level.

I really need to get a joystick to get into cliffs of dover as its pretty poo playing with k & m atm.

Have been like this with this steam sale...have stuck with oblivion (again) for the time being, with a few new mods and im more than happy :)

Also have a few "steam cloud" games that i can play on the laptop if the missus wants to go on the computer, which i can then carry on later if needs be :)

I get like this after a steam sale, fortunatly I managed to resist the urge and only got dirt 3 this time. Still got a few left over from xmas i need to finish, batman arkham asylem being one and bioshock 2 as well.
getting through bioshock at the moment, but when my mates come online I get distracted and end up on BC2 or L4D2 or WoW.
I get much more pleasure gaming with friends than i do from single player games.

Im finding it harder and harder to do long gaming sessions but i think its because i end up losing at whatever game im playing at some point, get angry and just quit. Ah the good old days raiding in wow sitting there for up to 6hrs straight :P

I remember the nights i played all night, Quake, UT, i won't play any game now unless i can devote at least a few hours.

I don't know how you find any enjoyment playing different games in such short intervals.

Games that I would play for 30 minutes would be stuff like Crysis2, FEAR3 and DOW2 etc so I just don't bother. Now a game like Skyrim for example, I have every confidence I will be playing that exclusively (with exception of BF3:P) until I get bored and need a change. But I'll be playing it for a solid week at least before I go and have a blast on L4D2 or something.

If you can't find an addiction and lose yourself to at least one of the games in your collection then I would say that you might not love games as much as you think you do.

Interesting thread and I feel many synergies with what has been said. I for one cant seem to stop playing bc2. Everytime I try a new game I usually quit after 30mins and go back to bc2. Best tip I can give which helps if you have a lot of games installed on Steam is to uninstall most of them and leave yourself a limited choice.

I spend more time reading reviews, watching videos and reading up on games than I spend actually playing them. I then buy a game read up on all the info I can then play for a few hours then rinse and repeat.

Lol

This.

I'm sitting with AC: Brotherhood and ME2 and I can't bring myself to install them as they would just increase the ridiculous number of games I own already :/

I usually get awfully overwhelmed if I've just bought a few games, especially if none of them really capture my interest straight away, eventually I'll just end up playing none of them.

That is because the quality of games coming out recently are crap, nothing else to it really.
