Battlefield 3 no XP support

well then if this is true they should have supported dx10/11 into XP then instead of trying to 'bully' users into upgrading, its typical bill gates moaning he dosn't have enough money as usual

and remember that 'windows' is only a software interface so using XP does not mean you have a '10 year old system' its all about the hardware (and if your graphics card supports DX10)

And while they were at it they could've added DX10 support to Windows ME as well, that's only a year older.

well i used to be on windows ME before 'upgrading' to XP, the only reason i did this was because ME had 'serious' issues with newer hardware, I dont think it supported HT iirc, also i think it had problems with higher clock speeds on 'newer' cpu's as well as a load of other things, its not like now with the artificial limitations forced onto windows XP to try and make us upgrade, if windows 7 was really 'that good' they wouldn't need to go to extreme measures like this to pull us away from XP

Funny, I don't recall Bill Gates ever complaining that he doesn't have enough money... It would be a strange thing for someone that's given ~$28 billion to charity to do come to think of it...

And you'd quite happily be stuck on 32 bit XP forever? Or would you rather sit there struggling to get your drivers to work on 64bit XP?

Nods approvingly.

Like or dislike the guy, he has done a lot more good with his wealth than most people do with similiar status.

Im sure in BC2, people with DX11 couldnt see through some smoke when people on old machines and low settings could. Thus giving an advantage to them!

Possible BF3 trying to make a better playing field ?

:D he probably is, he dont have a clue.

i understand and i have already said i will be using windows 7 for bf3

some people .

i understand the differences i have w7 for like 100000 time i just prefer xp. reel your neck in for a minute you might see that :)

Have a glance at the consoles, then back to PC hardware.
The Xbox360 has a DX10 GPU and the PS3 has a DX9 GPU

Now to PC hardware,
http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

70% of gamers have at least a DX10 capable graphics card, which means that 30% won't be able to run BF3 due to being limited to DX9 (and granted, those DX9 cards wouldn't be much fun to play on)

But let me put it another way, that graphics card you bought in 2006, such as a GTX 7800, is no longer supported, whereas, on the PS3 - which has a very similar chipset directly based on a 7800 - will be supported.

For arguments sake, you might as well be complaining to PS3 owners for holding onto such ancient hardware. Why should support for a PC system on a similar spec to the PS3 be suddenly dropped, alienating 30% of potential gamers? Surely if it can run on a PS3 it can run with the bells and whistles turned down on a 5 year old rig with a high end GPU from that era.

The money comes from consoles, which means that they have to cater for the ageing hardware there, and the DX9 chipset on the PS3.

If the PS3 is running DX9 hardware, then I'm going to assume DX9 will be supported in the PC.

I was using XP in 2001, ten years later this isnt news that we now have a dx10 only mainstream game.

Just get it on console is the obvious alternative

I'm quite sure that the Xbox doesn't run Dx10 though, more of a Dx9.5

If the PS3 is running DX9 hardware, then I'm going to assume DX9 will be supported in the PC.

Except that for the fact that they've clearly stated it wont

Is that how it works? I've played DX9 games on a DX8 card, doesn't it just use a lower version? And aren't there often options to use OpenGL?

It'll only use a lower version if there is support for it. BF3 has been coded to take advantage of the features found in Dx10 and 11, which Dx9 simple can't support

What a load of rubbish.360 doesn't use a dx10 gpu and ps3 doesn't use dxanything never mind 9. Also it not running on consoles with all the bells and whistles as you say. I'm on a phone right now but this made me log in reading that dross

I only made the switch from XP to 7 (completely avoided Vista) late last year. Was a far smoother transition than previously feared since I'd been on the former so long...about 8 years!

Not gonna go into it too much, but suffice to say I now much prefer it and couldn't go back. Even most of my older games still run on 7 x64, like Thief 1 & 2, Fallout 1 & 2, SS2, amongst others and the respective communities are still coming with fixes for those few that have problems so there's really no need to dual-boot or look back at all :)

Isn't XP due to be unsupported in a couple of years? If people are THAT bothered that they have DX10/11 hardware but not a capable operating system that they prefer to use daily... dual booting is their compromise. It's not the end of the world.

The console versions will run their own unique version of the game engine to suit them, the PC version will be the flagship. At some point game developers need to move on. They can't just make a DX9 game and then slap on the DX10/11 bits on afterwards which seems to be an unsuccessful trait thus far, plus by that point it is just compromise and people start crying "CONSOLE PORT, PC GAMING IS DEAD, THEY DON'T LOVE US ANYMORE, I'M RONERY, IT'S ALL JUSTIN BEIBERS FAULT!".

I'm happy to hear Dice/EA have a game engine that is going to be pushing the latest technology away from the console market even though they claim to have something just as good for the consoles too. I'd sooner this than the other way around!

Hello welcome to the PC gaming forum. This is what we do pretty much every day.

Why should support for a PC system on a similar spec to the PS3 be suddenly dropped, alienating 30% of potential gamers?
It is called progress. What do you expect them to be doing? Spending extra time and money so their game can look like **** on older machines? Err no.

Surely if it can run on a PS3 it can run with the bells and whistles turned down on a 5 year old rig with a high end GPU from that era.
Errr it can't run on a PS3 with any bells or whistles because the hardware just isn't powerful enough.

Good to know we are dropping old tech and moving on. If we just stick with the old because it does the job we would still be in caves using sticks to beat animals for food.
