My car insurance runs out at the end of the month, & got my renewal quote from Swiftcover which i decided i wasn't going to take as it gone up over £200 from last year.

Anyways i cancelled my insurance with them online, and also cancelled my direct debit just to be sure as i owe them nothing.

So today i get this email

Dear Mr Wilkins

Policy Number: *******
DIRECT DEBIT CANCELLATION

Your bank has informed us that your Direct Debit instruction to pay for your swiftcover.com insurance policy has been cancelled.

We need a valid payment method in place to allow changes to your policy and to enable it to renew.

Please contact our Swift Accounts Team as soon as possible so that we can reinstate it for you.

well i don't want it renewing as i've already cancelled it online a couple of days beforehand.

What i want to know is can they go into my bank after i cancelled the direct debit to them, as i have no intention of ringing their premium rate number, to be kept on hold for 10 minutes+ while i tell them i've already cancelled it online.

Plus i've already sorted my car insurance out for the end of the month, and got it a few quid cheaper than last year.

Just phone them, and ask to be reimbursed the cost of the call if it really bothers you.

Better to make sure it's absolutely sorted than potentially have an insurance company blacklist you on the national register...

Just email back sating you've cancelled. But be aware, I cancelled a direct debit with my bank and a car manufacture at the end of a personal lease with balloon payment. Both acknowledged and the car was returned and signed for, next thing I know is that a certain German car companies finance arm took £15K from me, then all that happened was that my bank kindly told me my overdraft had been extended! It took a month to get it back and only my bank apologised and returned all interest and £50.00 for my trouble.

Andi.

Better make sure this is handled gracefully as you don't want a customer-cancelled DD to appear on your credit record.

I paided my final payment last month, so i get my autorenewal quote which i don't want so cancelled it online, then went ahead and canclled my direct debit, i've now setup insurance to start at the end of the month with somebody else.

Ok thanks for the clarification.

I've always asked for written confirmation, of any cancellations to direct debits, from the companies taking them before I delete my own from my accounts.

Check out saynoto0870 website for obtaining free or local phone calls for companies.

Well i can't see how when i don't owe them any money now and my insurance is fully paid up.

In the past, I've never had any problems when it comes to renewal time, i've cancelled direct debits before online without any problems.

But i've been reading up even after you decide you don't want to renew your insurance, swiftcover have a nasty habit of dipping into your bank and taking money, hence why i Swifty ended my direct debit with them, so they don't do this.

Well i 've just sent an email off to them, as to why i need to reinstate my direct debit to them, when i don't wish to renew.

Well i finally got back my email.

Here what it says

Dear Mr Wilkins

Thank you for your e-mail.

I can confirm that you have declined renewal so the Direct Debit would not need to be reinstated. Your final payment was applied for on the 08/06/2011. Please accept my apologies for any confusion caused

it goes on abit more trying to blag me they match the quote i've already got ect ect.

but least it sorted and i was in the right. :)

It's like i've said before, insurance companies expect you to just let it auto renew, even if you cancel they have some underhanded tatics like taking your renewal price even when you cancelled, because people leave their direct debit's credit cards ect on file even after they finished with them, hence why i canclled my direct debit soon after i declined my new quote.
