A single UK ticket has won Europe's biggest-ever lottery prize, the estimated £161m EuroMillions jackpot.

The winner matched all five main numbers and both the Lucky Stars to scoop the jackpot, which had been capped after a series of rollovers.

It is not known whether the ticket belongs to an individual or syndicate, or where they come from in the UK.

The previous biggest UK lottery winner was an anonymous player who claimed £113m in the EuroMillions in October.

Bought my first ever lottery ticket today (just because I saw the sign at the till when getting lunch earlier), won £6.40 from one ticket, not a bad way to start off.

Next time, the big one!

The authoritarian socialist in me thinks that the lottery jackpots should be capped at a couple of million per winner, and there should be no rollovers (all prizes distributed across most numbers matched).

Think how create it'd have been to have 84 new millionaires across Europe rather than one with £168m.

lolsocialistlottery? :p

actual jealous. i had my life all planned out! and my expensive ott overclockers.co.uk checkout ready to be paid for. gutted.

We spent most of the day planning ideas.

Probably the best was to blow the lot on a huge yacht, with a launch ramp for another yacht! If you're into boats that is. I'd rather have the cars.

Imagining if you won, that is actually a terrifying amount of money.

I'd be constantly worried someone was going to try and kidnap relatives/blackmail/threaten to kill etc.

I'd be much better to acquire that sort of wealth through success rather than get handed it on a silver platter. I know the novelty for me would wear off so quickly and life would be boring as hell. If you'd acquired it through success you would have slowly acclimated to that lifestyle over time and still have goals etc in life to keep your sanity! :D

If I won that, I'd still continue a 'normal' life. Just keep the money in secret and never have to worry about money related things again. Normal life + no money worries = happy life.

And do some investing for more money of course.

Yeah totally - why not? People are going to buy a ticket for £2m as much as they are for £160m. In fact, if the odds of winning a big chunk of cash are a lot higher, more people might buy a ticket?

I was just pointing out the humour in having 'socialist' and 'lottery' in the same sentence.
