Just wondering how many people on these forums have dyslexia and did it effect your job prospects/career etc landing you in a bad job because of it ?

I dont, though sometimes I feel like I do. I sometimes trip over myself when speaking or say the wrong word rather than the one I was thinking of. I'm pretty sure thats normal though?

The highest earner out of my old school crowd is dyslexic. He is a telecoms engineer and designs mobile phone network stuff.

I have trouble reading out loud and have dyscalculia, but I've never had any trouble.

Companies aren't allowed to not hire you because of a disability, unless the disability will obviously affect your work, so I shouldn't worry about it too much. Loads of people suffer with dyslexia who you wouldn't even think had it.

edit: trouble getting a job :p

I was diagnosed with it is primary school and had tuition through part of secondary school.

Personally i just think i didn't get on with the teaching methods. And probably just used as a cop out for teachers/schools to lay blame of poor standards elsewhere other than themselves.

Dyslexic - Yes, diagnosed while at school, and later re-checked at college/uni

Effect Job/Prospects - Guess it did, I hated school (obviously there were other reasons as well but it didnt help) and never got into subjects like I should have resulting in lack of grades/subjects I would have needed to go medical doctor/vet etc

Bad place now - No, I found computing to be a safe place due to spell checking, easy editing of what you wrote, double checking your calculations, input validation etc. So I followed that and am happy doing computing programming in a medical environment.

(auto correct was used lots in the making of this post :-p )

I get people calling at work all the time who claim they have it. Unless its a lot more widespread than I ever imagined, I'm convinced the majority of them are making it up.

Me: To apply for that promotion you just need to text such and such to this number
Them: I cant do that. I'm dyslexic, I cant read or write. Why cant you do it for me!?
Me: Must resist urge to call him/her a lying lazy chav!!!! Must....resist!!!

Exactly. My ex girlfriend never understood my opinion on this, she was absolutely adamant that it's unfair no matter what job you're going for... even in the case of being dyslexic and applying for a job where spelling/grammar are critical!

In response to the OP, nope, no dyslexia here.

people who cant spell for their lives say they have dyslexia, but I have it and my spelling is fine.

I have problems with ordering things ie remembering a set of number but getting them in the wrong order. Or when writing essays, sentences that make complete sense in my head come out in a funky order.

I also have issues remembering commands spoken to me, but it's an easy one to get around. "write it down or it ain't gona happen!"

oh and also it hasn't hindered me, Im studying marine bio at uni, passed first year really well and have lined up a masters course when im done.

Hoping for civil service work afterwards.....
