To think us oldskoolers used to put up with this!

ah.. tape's. I remember using them on my Oric (better than a spectrum :-P). Was always really annoying to almost load a game and then it crash.

Best thing I did was get an Amstrad 6128 (128K as I remember, and an integrated disk drive). That machine was awesome. I even got the Amstrad monitor converter to turn the monitor into a TV, lol. Sweet.
 
reminds me once when my tape player was almost finished loading up chequered flag and I knew it had a minute to go and it just stopped lol
Did anyone stupidly tape over the end of the tape with a savefile only to find out they had accidently taped over the game code. Damn you HeroQuest!!!

Technology aside there was loads of creativity back then in the Commodore days.

I was watching an interview recently with the founder of Sensible Software (Sensible Soccer/Cannon Fodder etc) and he was saying how the video games industry has been dumbed down to appeal to the masses and that it's more profitable to dish out an umpteenth FPS game than something original.
