Little update on 28nm production

Nope lol - I've not seen any reliable news from softpedia ever either.

nVidia have still been telling people they are on target for a late Nov launch so we will see (and we aren't talking paper launch).

really? link?

Im hoping they will release the high ends first. Hopefully ones that can support 3 monitors and have atleast 12GB VRAM cos - yknow, 1gb just isn't enough for ANYTHING - especially not 1920x1080

According to motor mouth at Semi Accurate we could see a 28nm product roll out in September time.

Low end parts were supposed to be starting to appear about now if those are pushed back to Sept. then it is likely that high performance parts would be pushed into early next year, tho last I heard nVidia was still telling partners late this year.

I strongly doubt about that. Small VRAM (e.g. 1GB VRAM) only cause "minor" issues such like lag spikes/stuttering which cannot be reflected by traditional benchmarks and hence it is easy to "fool" the customers.

Same story of the Linksys WRT54G wireless router: when Linksys decided to castrate the hardware since revision 5, only "minor" problems of unstability was introduced, which can be fixed by rebooting the router regularly and easily ignored/accepted by most customers.

Why not cut the cost when the customers cannot find out easily?

The only related link you will likely find publicly is http://www.fudzilla.com/graphics/item/23247-kepler-28nm-taped-out but I wouldn't hold much weight by anything said there (tape-out to market would typically be around 5.5 months).

Thanks :)

I was being sarcastic :p
Many people here are spouting BS about how 1GB isn't enough
1GB handles everything fine, maybe not top settings but more than good enough to make the gma playable. Ony time you need more is to max out Crysis 2 and for really high res

If people pay top dollar for an enthusiast card however aren't they entitled to expect top settings rather than settling for "playable".

I'm not trying to be argumentative by the way; I freely admit that I don't have enough knowledge or experience in this area to be able to form an informed opinion of my own, just trying to play Devil's Advocate.

Most of the top notch card has 1.5gb +
With one gig we're talking about the mid range cards like the 560, 6870 etc

Anyone who pays for an enthusiast card will get atleast 1.5gb today :)

so basically neither company is going to have any significant amount of cards out this year.
late launch with very limited availability and then production/availability ramping up in the first quarter.

oh and just to add my 2p worth to the 1GB gpu memory issue, Nvidia hasn't had a top end card with only 1GB on it for the last 15 months whereas AMD its only been 7 months

To be fair, 1GB only gets stressed with Crysis 2 and metro and such likes. There was no need for more VRAM at that time.
