Unholy mother of tornados batman, this thing is mega noisy!

Stuipd me assumed all CPU coolers came with PWM fans that slowed down at idle after my first purchase of a chepo Akasa about 3 years ago, but even with the 1600rpm resistor in place this thing is way too loud.

Any suggestions, short of ordering 2 new fans with PWM, if there is no way around this what would be a good couple of fans to strap to this "case hurricane"?

By jeebus it keeps the temperatures frosty tho :)

What MB have you got?

If you have a MSI P67A *** - you can set the percentage of the fans speed in the BIOS via "CPU SMART FAN TARGET" (you can also do this with the case fans) - it will then only increase in speed if it goes over the dictated temperature that you input when setting up fan speed.

E.g. I have a MSI P67A-C45 and i've set my CPU fan speed to 50% (silent) and input a temperature of 55 degrees for the fan to start to spin to full speed. The only time it starts to do this is if i'm stress testing the CPU otherwise it's spinning silently at half it's optimum speed. Once the temps drop below 55degrees the CPU fan then drops back to 50%.

This method works with other flavour MBs too - but may be worded slightly differently in the BIOS.

ScratchFive - lol, will change fans if i can't find a workaround

Plec - I have a Asrock Z68 Extreme4, tried changing the settings in the windows utility with no luck, I will check out the BIOS. I tried making a custom setting in speedfan from a post on another website, that all works well but the "software controlled" option is lacking in my chipset settings in speedfan advanced options :/.

Phenomenologica - Yeah sorry I scrolled the wrong way for the name :), luckily I dont have a case with a glass panel in it so the aweful colours will be hidden. Thanks

Psychas - You just sold me on getting some, I think ill get 2 of them for the A70, a tenner a piece and free delivery will do me fine :)

I don't have a case with a side window either. I'm just picky. :p You won't regret the Apaches, they're excellent fans. You'll need a 4 pin PWM splitter cable however to run two off the CPU fan port.

As far as I'm aware it needs plugging into the PSU as well. I have one and if I recall the wiring only the speed control cables are linked to all fans from the header on the motherboard.

Yes, i was bit succinct/ambiguous with my last reply.

What i should have said was you can run it via PWM control - i.e. connecting the molex and the PWM header plus fans.

Or you can run it straight of the molex plus fans but with no PWM.
