Im getting a new CPU next month (upgrading from an Atlhon x2 6000+ lol) but my problem is...

How much powerful is the 2500k (OC) compared to the 2500 (Stock clock) ?

Im looking at the K just because it maybe more future proof than the 2500 because of the heavy OC you can hit with that, but its the diff in performance worth the $20 extra for the K ? i mean, how much future proof would be the 2500k compared to the 2500

GPU: HD 5770 1gb Vapor-X and i play on 1280x720 resolution (max of my monitor wich i dont think ill be changing anytime soon) its for gaming

EDIT: any reviews that i can see that put these 2 against each other ?

Can you overclock the non-K version at all?

Nope. But it can still TurboBoost from 3.3GHz to 3.7GHz:

But honestly, I'd just pay the little bit extra and get the K version.

Technically you can "overclock" the 2500 somewhat.

Standard TurboBoost:

1 core stressed 3.7GHz
2 cores stressed 3.6GHz
3 cores stressed 3.5GHz
4 cores stressed 3.4GHz

With the 2500 you can, at least on some boards, increase the TurboBoost by 4 notches:

1 core stressed 4.1GHz
2 cores stressed 4.0GHz
3 cores stressed 3.9GHz
4 cores stressed 3.8GHz

But, as you say, get a 2500K.

That way you can overclock all 4 cores to higher speeds.

That's pretty neat being able to raise the turbo

Buy yeah... get 2500k. Even if you don't plan to overclock now, it sucks to find 6 months later you want to try, and you'll kick yourself for not doing it

Did that with my current motherboard. Meh I'll never want sli/crossfire. Few months later, raage

Buyers remorse :p

I have a 2500k (running at stock at the moment) and upgraded from an Athlon x 2 5000+, I also have a ati 5770 graphics card and the difference is night and day from the Athlon. I game at 1680x1050 and the card coupled with the cpu have blasted through anything I have thrown at them at stock speeds.
I bought the k version of the i5 so I had some guaranteed headroom for the future for an easy speed boost. With my current graphics card and it being summer, I don't see the need to overclock at the moment but it's nice to know I have some power left if I need it.

I have a 2500k oc to 4.6g running quite happily. I was wondering about the turbo mode, is it an all or nothing sorta thing? Mine idles at 1.6g but switches straight to 4.6g when needed. Is there nothing in between?

Im in the same boat as you Faruko. Personally i'd say get the 2500k so in the future you can give it a little kick up the arse if needed :p
