Another vote for Alien Swarm...and Terraria 
Free/cheap Co-op game

Portal 2 - Brilliant puzzle coop, but once you've finished it it's done so this perhaps doesnt fit your criteria and it's not that cheap atm.
Terraria
Baldurs Gate 2 - I had a lot of fun playing through baldurs gate 2 with friends. It's still the best RPG experience to date imo, the only downside being that one player will play as the main character so will make all the decisions, but I'm sure you can come to an agreement.
Magicka is hilarious in coop.
Alien Swarm is pretty good for a free game.
BC2 isnt exactly coop but it's excellent for going around as a duo, tearing **** up in tanks, boats, milk carts etc. and really rewards tight team play between 2-4 people.

Company of heroes if you like ww2 and real time strategy games. The game is very cheap to huy you can do 1v1, 2v2 etc its frankly awesome.

Alien Swarm is an awesome free Coop Game.
Not for free, look at Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Left 4 Dead 1/2, Supcom 2....

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 is awesome in coop mode, also good on xbox 360 not free but must be real cheap ny now

Resi Evil 5 or SWAT 4 are great fun co-op.
But for free, you can't go wrong with Alien Swarm

I missed out on the steam sale by moments
but played a m8's account and i really like the team effort you need to complete stuff +1
Took up alien swarm. Is a pretty sweet game. Being only 2 we get a bit mushed sometimes though. Terraria we killed the content in about 3 days. Ill have a look at LOTRO and maybe fork out for Magicka. Thanks for the suggestions. Keep em coming if you can think of one
