Any chance of a poll?

I'm really interested to know how people feel about singles these days. Can you pick an answer from these?

Do you buy singles?

Yes
Only if they are free (legally)
No but I do download them from other sources
No I only buy albums
No I only stream music

If you pick yes it would be great to know what kind of music you like.

Also, how do you listen to singles? Just when you feel like it or do you stick your iPod on shuffle or something? Create playlists?

Whilst we're at it, what do you think is a fair price for a single and an album? Do you think digital formats should be priced differently from physical formats?

Yes.

A lot of the artists I like (Celldweller, Blue Stahli, Damage Vault) release digital singles of between 1 and 3 tracks at a time. Much prefer this method of releasing music, means I get to hear new music more often.

Because they're US based it's about 4-6 dollars (depending on content) for a single, which works out dirt cheap with the exchange rate.

I usually playlist a load of recent track, or just listen to the single on loop a few times.

Still buy a lot of albums though, haven't bought anything full priced for a while, other than my favourite bands I tend to wait until the CD is down to £4-6 before buying.

It depends on what you mean by singles... I buy individual songs from iTunes, but not because they're "singles" per se.

I mean, I bought Don't Sweat The Technique by Eric B & Rakim the other day. Does that count?

No, not really. If I hear a song I like, I'll go and download the whole album.

Used to be I got them from "other" sources, but these days I use the Spotify subscription I get with my 3 contract.

So I come under #5, "No I only stream music". :)

Thanks for the info, grandad!

Hey, I do the same.

Firstly, the kind of music I listen to is made by people who make proper bodies of work, i.e. albums. Secondly, they also put effort into packaging and graphics, hence the physical object is aesthetic and part of the work.

(lol, they did change you to nonhelmet after all)

I've been buying Albums since the mid 1970's (showing my age here!) and have only rarely bought singles. Perhaps about 20-25 in all that time.

Believe it or not I've NEVER downloaded any singles or albums.

I mainly buy Albums on vinyl. I do have a few CD's. But, I have a lot of music on the PC that has been ripped from friend's CD's.

I rarely buy albums. What's the point. These days with mp3s I can buy the songs I like and none of the ones I don't. Often that is just one or two songs per artist. Obviously there are some albums but these are few and far between.

I only have one play list that goes on shuffle.
Sometimes I'll pick out certain music or an album if I'm in the mood. But generally it's just random playlist.

Indie/metal/rock sort of stuff.

i rarely buy singles. but if i do, i'll buy them from the amazon mp3 store. i've also bought a few songs from the evil that is itunes because they were exclusives not available elsewhere.

most of my listening is playing albums from beginning to end.

I stopped buying singles when I stopped being a teenager.

I'd say 'Yes' only when I've heard a song on a TV/Film soundtrack and a Youtube search has left me unsatisfied with the rest of their work.
