PYONGYANG - Coca-Cola and Kentucky Fried Chicken are to be supplied to Pyongyang by end of this year, according to YTN.

Representatives from the two companies paid a visit to North Korea last week, invited by a domestic government-owned company that specializes in hosting foreign investments.

Although Pyongyang has introduced foreign food like pasta or hamburgers to its citizens, this would be the first international chain to open a branch.

The first chain is to be opened by this autumn, along with official supply of Coke.

North Korea is hastening the relaxing of its relationship with the western countries, allowing foreign news agencies like the Associated Press and Reuters to open branches in the capital.

As Coca-Cola and KFC are often referred to as symbols of global capitalism, not to mention American culture, the North's intention brings about controversies concerning acceptance of the market system.

Read few days ago about letting in AP & Reuters, which imo is a big deal, but never expected them to allow KFC & Coke

Seems a big change for them? I wonder if Kim isn't running things so much now or whether they just need to get their economy working more?

Got to keep the people happy. Once that door is opened a little there will be no stopping it from slowly opening completely.

I doubt that any North Koreans, apart from the elite few, will be able to afford a KFC or a Coke.

I would expect anything like this would be available in the Yanggakdo Hotel, by the bowling alley / pool hall and not in the city itself. Therefore simply for foreigners and an elite few. The hotel only uses a handfull of its floors anyway. Pyongyang has a curfew and no electricity for a lot of the capital in the evening.

I doubt that any North Koreans, apart from the elite few, will be able to afford a KFC or a Coke.

I am sure the North Korean scientists have already reverse engineered Coke, to produce the same product at a fraction of the cost.
Or maybe they have done Pepsi, and need to Coke to come in so they can increase the price. :p

I am sure KFC isn't what you think either. To give it's proper full name, Korean Fried Chihuahua

The DPRK government is probably running out of room to keep prisoners and want to adapt the KFC method of raising poultry. Should just send them a copy of the Matrix.
