Are we in a golden age of PC gaming?

What I don't really understand (and this might be me being a total noob) but aren't all console games created on PC's in the first place. All design and that is done on a PC. So there is always going to be a need for PC's. What I don't understand though is that games are created on PC's and yet are not released on PC for play. I presume this is down to coding but just seems silly to create games on a PC to import onto a console and never release a PC version of it.

Not IMO as while the tech and quality of the games has gotten better I find the Storys and length of games are getting shorter and more idiot-friendly than they were back during the 90's - about 2002 since then now I find it's play a game for a couple of days and oh it's complete whereas back then it was play a game for months and you might have completed it e.g The Nomad Soul, Deus Ex, Unreal, Baldurs Gate 1&2, System Shock 1&2.

Short version:

Games are too short and storylines are too straightforward nowadays you'll only ever get the odd 1 or 2 games that actually take longer than a week to complete.

We are in a golden age of Indie Games, mostly thanks to steam, and in a major decline of mainstream games, mostly thanks to EA and consoles.

Spot on

The best way to answer the original question, would be to pick a handful of games from each genre you enjoyed a few years ago ( or 5/10 etc) and then to pick out a bunch of recent titles in each genre you currently enjoy

Infact, i think this would be a very interesting activity to do :)

Quite frankly after doing this myself theres simply no alternatives to some of games aside from waiting on retro/digital retailers to make them win7 compatable so I can rebuy them (all hail GOG our savior), which is sad, and I know for a fact I'm not alone there

Gaming as a whole has become an accepted form of entertainment media, up there (and in many ways, on equal footing) with the film/music industry.
Catering to the masses and a need to want to exploit every hole/niche of potential customers is a side effect of this.

I'm not really restricted in the sort of games I play, I'm open minded and quite frankly if I enjoy it, I play it.. I'm against the consumer zombie morons that go flavour of the month with whatevers hot and I tend to stick to my guns until I feel I'm finished with it..

The trouble is the developers cater for that consumer niche now, and seeing as every triple A update seems to be a DLC now, its a habit they are certainly not going to shift away from.

It almost feels like the whole "beat it all" mmo attitude has shifted into all the other genres. I don't know if that makes sense to you

Theres a hell of a lot I could say but this is already too long.. I'm not saying gaming is doing bad but I'm not screaming from the top of a hill how good it is either :P

I don't generally bother with forums much unless its a good discussion so naturally I make screw ups :P

Giving it a second thought, that comparison thread really would give an interesting insight... somebody start it off :)

IMO PC games peaked in 2000 with the release of Deus Ex. Seriously, that was the best game ever. Pretty graphics are nice, but like any form of fiction, the script is more important.

When they bring back really really engrossing single player games like Frontier Elite II etc than we will be in a golden age. I don’t want to be online for mmorpg or fps.

I would like to be able to play an offline single player game that lasts for months.

/goes off to download Frontier First Encounter for Win 7………………oooo it works:D:D

You know what, this is a golden age for PC gaming

Consoles have had a massive influence on the rise of indie games, XBLA and PSN have both seen a constant stream of quality indie titles, and arcade titles from bigger devs like Shadow Complex from Epic.

Thread is about PC games though, not Console ones.

The popularity of console games and their crossover to the PC is causing a decline to the quality of mainstream PC games.

I meant Indie games on the PC, I've never used XBLA or PSN and never will.

I agree but hardly any developers are utilising direct x 11 properly, lazy ****s

Its not their fault that the publishers also require the games to be able to run on consoles, hence there wont be many DX11 games until there are DX11 consoles, which is one of the reasons for why consoles are causing a decline in PC game quality, though not the most important one.

Most certainly not a golden age.

-Almost all new FPS out have been ruined by the COD4+ mentality. Hopefully BF3 will bring me back to gaming like CSS and BF2 did in the past.

-Pretty much impossible to find a decent and challenging RPG any more, sure some of them exist but most of them have to be modded or just aren't good.

-RTS games like supreme comander got destroyed by the consoles and some moron releasing supcom 2 on console. The settlers and total war series got killed because they had to be made noob friendly and then they became so simple that they just had to add gimmicks and over complicate things that just irritate you instead. In fact the AOE style game doesn't really seem to even exist any more. Sure I don't want a copy or a remake but my favourite RTS of all time was Empire Earth and that was based off the AOE rules.

Can't remember the last game I played for more than 2 months since about 3 years ago, at least.

The amusing (and sad) thing is that few of the kids days experienced it, so them this IS the Golden Age! :o

yup its very sad and most believe even online games are better when in reality they are getting more limited ,maps sizes if anything have gotten smaller , the amount of players on each side is reduced.

how anyone can think we are in a golden age when games are short , less complex etc even a lot of amiga games back in the day were more complicated than modern games.

the original tomb raider would probably make most derps heads explode because its to difficult but it was one of the best selling games of all time, why do developers assume people arent as smart as they were 10+ years ago?

its not just because they want to capture the younger audiences how many of us were under 10 years old and capable of playing games on C64's , spectrums , amiga etc loading a game was more challeneging then actually playing one these days.

What had bigger maps 10 years ago? I haven't played Battlefield but that has massive maps doesn't it?

Agree with Tomb Raider 1 though, that's one of my fondest memories of gaming, looking back. The others just aren't the same. The cartoony blood effects and flashing circles around enemies ruin the feel imo.

There are still great games out there though. like Stalker that I mentioned, 10 years ago there was nothing like it I don't think. But then again with Stalker 2 being multiplatform it could end up turning into a crappy console port like all the rest.

@ Bigdave

Remember when ubisoft started putting DRM in settlers? (think it was S3)
"please insert mission cd 1".. this was like 10+ years ago too, lol

ironically i think it went downhill for them after s2.. the games obviously LOOK better, but they never topped s2's gameplay

As far as bigmaps go... who remembers Tribes?
I know a new tribes game is being made, the trouble is its being made for both the windows/xbla platforms.. and also with the U3 engine.. which means it would be suprising to see maps on the scale of the old ones.

In Ubisoft's defense, regardless of their DRM they are one of the only PC game companies still making decent PC games.
