I am thinking about buying a computer from OCuk for an amount in excess of £1300..

Now the question is do any of you guys out there have any insurance plans on your computers and if so who with.

I dont like the idea of spending all that money on a computers and not having any cover for it but im also not keen on an overpriced insurance plan.

Cheers

Adam

No cover here. If something happened to my computer that wiped it all out it would also be doing damage to the rest of my house. Home insurance will pay for it all.

I don't have the computer insured, not sure if it's covered by house insurance as I still live at home. I made mine myself, so all of the individual components will be covered by warranty for x amount of time, could be ranging from 1-5 years, depending, and you can get replacements free of charge in this time frame. This is all you really need I think, personally. By the time most warranties run out you'll be wanting to upgrade again with something new anyway.

Yep, pretty sure mine's under the home insurance.

You may want to check what the limit is for items before they have to be declared as a high value item, should be OK though.

If its a pre-built one, and your not building it yourself from parts, I would've expected it to have a serial number somewhere, in which case, it may be worth calling your contents insurance and giving them the serial, in case of burglary.

I have separate insurance on my laptop, but only because I take it out to jobs. Otherwise, I see no need, when I have contents insurance.

Ah thats seems ok then. I have home contents cover and can add items but didn't know if it was worth insuring seperate or not.

I guess i would just add it to that then.

Thanks guys

Would be built by OC mate so not sure how it works. Never had one build by them before so dont know it it comes as a bundle or if it would be seperate parts warranty

Your contents insurance should cover it provided you could produce the receipts/invoices in the event of your house burning down.

If I recall you can insure "Specific" items with a small premium. You can then tell them the specifics of the machine but to be honest, after a few years it'll only be worth half the value anyway. Besides, I'm not sure sure if it's a good idea to be telling the insurance company you [when I say you, I don't mean you, I mean generally] built your own PC and use water to cool it :D

So insurance companies will only pay out on contents if you still have the receipt?

No, as long as you can accurately describe something (and don't seem like you're taking the ****) they'll usually pay out.

best thing to scan the receipts and put them somewhere on the web, like your flickr account, then in the event of house fire you have the receipts saved :) I think its better than not having receipts at all

Be aware that home insurance often needs high value items to be specifically listed otherwise there is a limit to the payout.

Mine is all seperates so its not an issue. I think our insurance only needs items over £1500 to be listed and we have no single item worth more than that.
