New spec please - £200-250 budget >:)

Lol yeah I see what you mean. What sort of budget would you allow for an amp?

I guess you are wanting, Xonar DG -> Desktop Amp -> D2000 as your final set-up to allow for DH rather than an external Amp/DAC?

I'm not sure on an exact budget tbh, I guess I can go to around £140 if needed, not sure I'd be happy spending much more unless there is something truly amazing for just a bit extra.

But yea, it looks like DG -> desktop amp -> D2000's for now, and then buy a new sound card in the future, not the STX but something around the D2X level.

Looks okay, but I'm a gadget nerd, too bland for me :(

Hmm, I still don't think there's much out there for ~£140 that will be a better buy than the E9.

The Matrix M-Stage can be had for £180 and gets good reviews. It is a "clone" of the much more expensive Lehmann Black Cube Linear which is about £750.

The thing is, it still looks like an amp. There isn't gonna be much gadget sex appeal at this price range.

Yeah tis quite the shame.

I think the little dot looks kind of awesome, with the tubes sticking out the top. Must be something else out there. If not it'll be the e9, hidden behind my screen :)

Yeah tube amps do look pretty cool. I wouldn't mind getting one some day, but I've read that Denons love solid state more than tubes.

I quite like the look this set-up....shame it's $5000.

Just found the "Neco Soundlab DUAL AMP portable headphone amplifier - V.2" which is getting great reviews too on the web. It's from an engineer who makes them personally in his own time and sells them on the bay, and also gives you the option to upgrade them with better op amps etc.

Looks great imo. Possibility instead of the E9?

Well, you need to factor in shipping and import tax. My LCD-2 came to about £800.

I don't think any headphone can be called "best in existence" though. In this tier you have Beyer T1s, Sennheiser HD800s, LCD-2, Hifiman HE-6 all of which are considered technically comparable. It's all about different flavours and sound signature preference at this level. Then there are STAX headphones which are considered even "better" but cost like £1500-£3000.

Sorry Aedus, I can't really help with that amp you linked. It does look good for the price though.

Just a quick update:
My Goldring NS's finally fell apart last night, the right cup literally fell off due to it being so cracked. The whole thing is completely up **** creek. So I decided to order my Denon D2000's now, as I don't really have much choice in the matter as I don't have a usable pair of headphones anymore. They should be here tomorrow, shame I couldn't wait till they dropped £20 again.

Also i've been reading that the Denon D series have had problems with screws coming loose or something? Shamrock, have you experienced anything like this at all?

I'm still not decided on my amp, though.

Ooo, thats good (good about ordering the D2000 not the Goldrings dying!). Hopefully you will find them to be enjoyable, otherwise I have failed.:D

I did read about those problems. I've not had any issues myself so far, so I'm hoping it's just a few isolated incidents of bad QC.

Import Tax? Shipping? My mother lives in America, I would get her to bring them over on a visit.

If I ever felt rich enough to that is!

Did you see the latest Stax SR-009 on Head-fi? - £4000

I hope so too, or you will be to blame, Shamrock. I will find you.

But hopefully I can return my goldrings as I've not even had them 1 year yet, and then get a replacement and give them to my gf.

I also love how my topic has gone from £200 headphones to £4000 headphones :o

Yeah, once you get your all your gear never go near an audio related forum again or you will catch the dreaded 'upgraditis' - curable only by the unobtainable 'perfect headphone' or death.

Only if they break in the future :D
I've been reading that the screw issue has been fixed now, so hopefully it's true. If not I'll have to read up on the mods people do to fix the issue.

1 other thing, I contacted Neco, who's portable amp I posted a page back. He will make me a full-sized Mosfet amp with a little custom change to give it more edge for bass (Which he offered to do for free), and he also gave me not only a full 1 year warranty, but in the future beyond that, if any part of the amp breaks, he will only charge me the cost of the component. I'll be able to order 1 of those next week when he makes his next batch, so I think I'll be going with that. It gets great reviews, it's a decent price and looks pretty decent (Imo).

Nice, sounds like you got a good deal. Did you mention to the guy you'd be pairing it with a D2000? I wonder if the D2000 needs "more edge for bass" lol, it should have plenty already!

Yeah, Neco seems like a great guy, and he's from the UK too. Hopefully if this amp is really good i can make some recommendations to others too about the quality of the kit so there is something new people could potentially go for as well.

and no, I didn't, he'd probably think I'm crazy if I did. I'll show you what he said though:
I can enhance the bass for you just enough, not too much so sound is still balanced. I can do this at no extra charge.

Seems like he knows what he is doing with them, so I put my faith in him and his skills :D
