Is it possible to transfer files via an ethernet cable from a laptop to a pc ? as im giving my dad my laptop and dont have an external hdd to transfer everything over to.

It is possible - you'll need a crossover cable. Do you not have a WiFi/network connection you can use?

i do but i have over 100gigs worth of stuff i want to transfer from my laptop to the new rig, how would i do this out of curiosity please ?

take the hd out of lappy and put it in you rig, will be the fastest most easy way.
(then you copy from the 2.5 to what ever you store on).

You shouldn't really need crossover cables any more, modern network ports will determine what device is connected and switch the pins accordingly.

10 minutes taking the hard drive out the laptop and connecting it to the desktop. 45 minutes to transfer the documents.

Or.... 16 weeks via network :)

Good choice :D

Modern Ethernet means no crossover cables....just connect it and go :)

Or make a wireless network and share em over that :D

If you have relatively modern network devices then it's pretty rapid.

I always use an ethernet cable overnight to transfer stuff across. I've transfered my 160GB media library in that method twice now i think. I've always just left it overnight, although it only took around 3 hours from Macbook to new rig.

I've got a similar question. I've just taken the HDD out of my old laptop and want to transfer the files to my new laptop.

It's got the standard connectors, sata power and the sata data.

Has anyone done this before and know if theres a cable that can plug into both of those and plug into my pc (usb or esata)?
