so got a call off the missus today. Car wouldn't start. Got green flag out and they say alternator is shot. Quick google shows I can get secondhand one for £30-£50. Is this a bad idea, should I replace it with a new one? And is it a big job fitting it.

Hoping the 5 start AA warranty I got with the car 10 months ago will cover it.

I had the alternator in my Spitfire pack up, the local motor factors sold me a new one for £26.

Might be worth asking your local motor factors before going down the second hand route, although they do generally last a long time.

Kind regards

Check with motorfactors, they tend to accept the old one in part exchange as well.

cheers guys, as it turns out the AA 5 star cover I got with the car covers it. Green flag are going to take it to the nearest AA service centre (Halfords) and they are going to fix it all under cover. Wont cost me a penny. Pleasent change.

That's a good turnout.

Has anybody refurbished an alternator themselves by replacing bushes? Is it a hard job?

I have read on a few forums that it can be done for, usually, <£5!

I wonder if proper Spitfires had alternators? :o

Hehe, I don't think they did!
