Needing some advice on HD6990

Hello, new member here.

My current build is:
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Motherboard
Intel Core i7 920 1st gen @ 2.66ghz
6gb 1333mhz RAM
ATI Radeon HD4870x2
Noctua NH-U12P Cooler
Antec P182 Case
700w PSU, I will be buying a new one, probably a 1000w.

My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 2493hm, so I run games at 1920x1200 resolution.

So, I am going to buy a new card soon to play the new games coming in fall (Skyrim, BF3 etc.), I was thinking of buying a HD6990, would my current system bottleneck it, or would it be okay? Also how would the games run with the card? I don't really care about having 16x AA, but at least all max settings not including AA, but of course that would be welcome if its possible to max them out and have a playable FPS. So I need some advice on how my system would run those games if I got myself a HD6990.

Also, a question not really related to this part of the forum, but if I were to overclock my i7 to running lets say 4ghz, would my processor cooler be enough to maintain temperatures if I was running a 4ghz i7 along with a HD6990?

Thanks to anyone who answers to this post.

Hi azgah

I had the same CPU, cooler and motherboard as you, ran it stable at 3.8GHz no problem although the temps did get up to the high 80s/low 90s under stress testing. That should go nicely with a 6990. Personally, after toying with the idea of a couple of 6970s I'm waiting for the next gen cards to replace my SLi 260s

Welcome to the forums :)

The i7 is fine at 4.2 ghz and you can have a 6990 in with it as long as you have decent airflow.

Presumably you are getting a good quality PSU? I would recommend the Silverstone ST1000-P.

Don't bother with a 6990 until manufacturer replace the crappy reference cooler with something better.

If you have the money, you can look into liquid cooling

EDIT: 5,000th post. Yay!!! :D

Which is what I ended up doing for my SB setup, 2x 6950's = £400, 1x 6990 = £550, performance gap is minimal IMO especially with OC'd 6950's, and you can take your pick from non-reference coolers with 6950 or 70 cards too!

they cant be modded anymore.

I know, however for the price and cooler, they're a really good deal. Dual 6950's crush practically every game and are the same as a 6990 with, theoretically more overclocking potential.

They will be cooler and quieter. Roughly the same speed when overclocked

no, you'd be very lucky to pick up any dual bios 6950 these days, but as far as OC editions go, the FrozR III OC/PE is up there with the best of them, I just wish I didn't rush into my build getting reference XFX 6950's instead of these.

If your crossfiring there isn't a great deal of difference between 6950 CF and 6970 CF (6990), worst case scenario, maybe 10fps a game? Hardly worth the extra £££

Edit: Cleeecoo beat me too it with better wording too :-(

Edit2: check this out, 6950 CF vs 6970 CF (they don't have 6990 benches up yet) http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/299?vs=298

Its what swayed me too, I came very close to running just a single 6990, but the price vs performance stats didn't add up. Unless you plan on playing Metro 2033 maxed out at an insane resolution and wanted to quadfire (2x 6990) 6950's is the logical step.
