Please help me finally choose a gaming monitor

I need 16:9 for PS3...

So the only suggestion is the Dell?

I don't want speakers, I have Astro A40's.

Although you can't trust the response times the manufacturers post, they can't post false specs surely! It must have achieved a 2 ms response time at some time, whereas the Dell is 8 ms!! 8!!! I will try and see one in action but otherwise is there anything else I can get with a low response time. Any Asus or Acer? So far I think it is the VW246H that is looking good but I am not sure still.

Not gonna go into detail cos I gotta go to sleep now but the Dell doesn't really perform at 8ms because it has built in overdrive. But yeah, companies can tell 'white lies' about monitor response times.

Bump, gonna go look at the dell tomorrow, any other suggestions? What about the 3 I mentioned in the first post?

What about the Iiyama ProLite B2712HDS 27"?
I am seriously looking at that one, may order it next week. Sure, there will be better available but for that price it looks like a bargain (reviews seems good too).

Yeah I had a look at that monitor but I am now starting to think that 27" is too big and I am leaning towards a 24" monitor.

Needs to be:
23-24"
Sub 5ms response time (preferably sub 3ms)
Little input lag
Full HD at 1920x1080

I know response time given by manufacture can differ to the real thing but at some point it must have achieved the written response time otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to say it had a 2ms response time for example as that would be illegal.

Are you meaning the same things? Response time is related to ghosting, input lag is the main one you're after if it's for gaming, which is not related at all to response time.

The U23 has very low input lag, which is why it outperforms these "2ms monitors". Don't believe what the manufacturer states the response times are, anyway. Let reviews do that.

Also, I doubt 27" is too big. I was a big competitive player a few years ago (Halo mostly) with A40s and everything. I did my gaming on a 22". I then moved up to a 42" HDTV (C580 with game mode on) and still destroyed. Maybe you're not the same, but I don't think screen size is as big an issue that people say it is. Input lag is the one thing that will throw your game off and you want the one with the least input lag possible.

From memory, the U2311 is great for this, and the Hazro HZ27WC also has very low input lag, if you still want to go the 27" route.

There is probably better though, and I'll leave it to someone with 120hz experience to recommend monitors from there.

I'm using a benq LED 120hz monitor. It's 16:9 with HDMI and a headphone jack so you can plug an xbox/ps3 in to it and it looks fine. It's also very good for nvidia 3d vision, probably the best 3d monitor I've used (a lot of them have ghosting, this has none) :)

120hz is a LOT smoother for gaming, but I doubt consoles will make use of it.

PS3's only run at 60Hz so 120Hz is kinda pointless for me and the extra money spent on 3D will be wasted so I only want a 60Hz monitor.

@LC155 I currently play on a 42" HD TV with A40s etc. and play at a high level even on a 42" and I am pretty sure it won't make too much difference but I want to have more experience on a smaller monitor so 24" kind of. 27" is quite larger than the 23" they use at MLG for example so I want to stay at a close proximity to 23" with 24" being pretty perfect but I am still open to 27" monitors. How much of a difference would you say there is between playing on a 24 and 27 inch monitor? Is it notably different?

And I understand where you come from in reference to response time and input lag. But what I am saying is, I don't want much ghosting and I am afraid of buying the Dell and then having bad ghosting issues. Is it visually worse in terms of ghosting compared to 2ms monitors?

I know you say you can't go by what they put on specs but... surely they cannot say that there monitor is 2ms response time and they it is only 5ms for example. That is like me selling a car and saying that its 0-60 is 7 seconds and it turns out to be 9 seconds! It is illegal to do that.

In terms of input lag, how do I find out how much input lag the Asus VW246H has for example? I cannot find a review that tests the input lag of it.

Is there a monitor with both very good response time and input lag? I have always read response time, in terms of gaming, should be 5ms or less at maximum.

Forgot that part, point taken.

You won't be going to any MLG events I presume, so why try so hard to emulate it? A 27" will be more fun to play on than a 24". (And yes, there will be a noticeable difference in size)

And I understand where you come from in reference to response time and input lag. But what I am saying is, I don't want much ghosting and I am afraid of buying the Dell and then having bad ghosting issues. Is it visually worse in terms of ghosting compared to 2ms monitors?

Well, when PC gaming I can't say I notice much ghosting on my U23. Maybe I've become desensitized to it but I think I remember that the Dell has overdrive, bringing it down to 5< ms. Check reviews for it regarding the ghosting if you want.

They pretty much can. They can quote a response time of 2ms, but that doesn't mean colour. It can just mean grey to grey, which means basically **** all when gaming.

You're gonna have to check out users who own the monitor if you can't find reviews of it online, but generally I'd say if you can't find a review for a monitor, it's not worth it. All decent review sites should test for things like input lag.

MLG use ASUS VH236H monitors and I cannot find any reviews on that?

Isn't the VW246H close to that?

And my team are going to Anaheim, however I cannot make it. But I will be playing in the next MLG event.

EDIT: If we look at the Dell U2311h, isn't Dell's Alienware 23" monitor better again?

Okay, that changes things. If you're actually attending events, by all means copy everything they have.

That's the exact problem... I can't as I can't get the ASUS VH236H and that's why I figured the VW246H would be a close match? If there is a better 23 or 24 inch monitor out on the market for gaming I will get it but I don't know which one whether it be the VW246H or the VX2439wm or the U2311H etc.

So which one? :) By the way, I greatly appreciate your help.

EDIT: the only thing stopping me getting the Dell is just the 8ms response time

Consider the Dell response time to be more like 3ms, if that. If you've got the money though, I have heard great things about the Alienware but that was from main stream magazine reviews like Which, PC Pro and Stuff. The guys here could maybe give more advice on it.

It's hard though! LOL

And yeah, the Alienware looks good and I would like some opinions on that but you do pay a premium for the name :/

EDIT: Any good LG 24" console gaming monitors? There must be another 24" monitor with good response time and low input lag for CONSOLE gaming? The only one you guys are strongly suggesting is the Dell and I have just come back from a friends house who of which owns a u2311 and I played COD on it and I don't know wether he had it set up right but blacks didn't look that good and in high paced action I felt it didn't perform that well.

EDIT2: what about the LG W2363D for PS3 gaming? I know it is 120Hz but will it still work well with the ps3?

Well, it depends on what revision he has. I've read some bad things about A01 and A02 is better, but not great. A03 is the latest revision and by all accounts I've read, should be amazing. I'm still faffing around which monitor to order but if I can get a U2311H A03, I'll probably go for that.

Not quite sure with regards to the LG and ps3 gaming. Google could be a friend here. I know the 3D definitely won't work though.

Ah yes, that's a very good point. I will need to ask him.

On the other hand, I went out today around PC world and curry's etc. and they have absolute FA to be honest. However, they did have the Acer GD245HQ which was an early option of mine and I was pleasantly surprised how it performed. I mean, it has good specs and all and the display quality was better than I expected.

So now, I am looking at an array of monitors again but with these options:
Acer GD245HQ - £224.85
ASUS VG236HE - £229.00
ASUS VW246H - £201.54
LG W2363D - £156.00
Alienware AW2310 - £399.99
Dell U2311h (A03) - £N/A

Is there a way to eliminate any of these monitors? I know some monitors are 3D and I will not be able to use these features, however, I don't mind spending a little extra as it may be likely that I use the feature in the future when I get a new graphics card for my PC.

I presumed the VG236h was the 3D version of the VH236h but available in Europe, but the specs are totally different!? Anyone have in depth reviews of these and/or experience with any of these monitors?

Eliminate the Alienware on its awful price, tbh.

The Dell, where you found it, is A02 btw.

Aye, the Alienware is so overpriced it is a real annoyance :/

Where can I find the cheapest A03 Dell? What price is that ranging from?

EDIT: I have updated the price of the VG236HE as the version with the E on the end is without the 3D glasses and I wont need them atm and also, the monitors in bold are still contendors.

It's actually quite hard to find anywhere that stocks the A03. Best bet is to google 'U2311h', go to shopping then just e-mail retailers to find out about the rev. Can't name individual retailers on here, btw. They're competition, you see. :p

Ah ok, the monitors left are therefore similar prices then... Choosing a monitor is so hard.
