Didn't play these first time round and I'm looking to get one of them to satisfy my strategy itch. Which one would any players suggest getting?

Homeworld
Homeworld Cataclysm
Homeworld 2

The first two on the list are quite rare to as far as I can see. I downloaded the demo of the first from Cnet and quite liked it, despite the poor max resolution (can this be modded to 1920x1080?) and the nineties-o-vision textures/models. Would I be missing out on a lot by jumping into 2?

Cheers :)

I'd go for Cataclysm first, they got it perfect with that one I think.

Also, SIEGE CANNON. If ever an in-game gun was deserving of capitals, this is it :D

Play the first one first, and maybe one of the great mods for hw1 which are sacrifice of angels or the starwars or one of the many b5 mods. Then do cata which is good but ship wise it lacks a bit i feel and then go for hw2 then after u do story of hw2 try one of the many mods for it.

Yes if you skiped to hw2 you would be missing out on a great story and gameplay as hw1 has the best formations that didnt make it to cata or hw2.

As for resolutions. HW2 can be output to 1080p but i dont know for the others. With hw2 u have to edit a shortcut for the game to do it or edit a ini file i think.

Multiplayer for hw1, the servers were shut down awhile ago, maybe other ways to play mp tho if thats what ud like to play.

I didn't play Homeworld 2 properly, but I did complete Cataclysm many years ago (when I should have been studying for my A-Level exams!), and it's truly superb. Actually started playing the first game last September too while I was in Canada, and it's excellent too. Based on that, it's probably a good idea to just start with Homeworld and work your way through them.

I really hope there's a Homeworld 3 one day, they're fantastic games, and this is coming from someone who usually isn't interested in strategy titles.

Homeworld 2 ruined things for me with the auto-warp on victory thing. I absolutely hated not being given a chance to rebuild and re-order after a level.

That and the pre-patch third mission that actually made me give up.

Multiplayer doesn't bother me tbh, I can't commit too much time due to family. You can save mid mission in 1 and Cataclysm? :p

I bought both Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2. Played the first half of the first then got stuck and bored. The second even less further into it, I always found them to be difficult to get into and that single player missions required you to have just the right mix of units and micromanagement control to win.

Mail me in trust if you still have them and fancy helping me out :p Configure your trust and you'll be allowed in the members market

Half way through my first play through i found a way round that.

Kill off everything apart from one little ship that's not important, rebuild and re-order as much as you like. Then kill off the last ememy ship and the auto-warp will kick in. :)

ooo i remember that third mission pre patch! that was so hard! i never finished off the story for hw2 because of that.

HW1 and Cataclysm are definitely worth a play through the story in both of them were amazing for their time.

Ive been playing Complex mod for homeworld 2 over hamatchi such a great multiplayer mod!, after reading this though i may have to uninstall it and play through the single player.

Cata was best, HW2 is superb however, HW was good, but not as good as the other two.

Thread hijack!!!!
I just got homeworld 2 today as I played it a while back and decided on some naustalgia. After trawling around the googles I managed to get it running on win7 x64 by using only patch 1.1. But now ingame I can major juttering when trying to scroll or look around. The graphics of the ships and such run smooth as silk. After some investigation I find its also using a full core worth of cpu from start!

Google isnt being helpful on the latter problem and I'd love to play this again :p Anyone else come across this?
