Blood pressure and pulse rate readings

I got a HR monitor the other day for running, my resting heart rate is around 53 bpm sat up at computer, though technically the reading should be taken lying down.

I've just had a play with my Dad's new toy and have measure the following:

Blood Pressure: 132 / 84
Pulse Rate: 59

I'm assuming these are okay. Anyone else got any readings?

They are both ok for your age. Pulse rate at your age would normally be higher than that in all fairness. The machine I doubt counted your pulse for a whole minute and therefore multiplied up and therefore a few slower seconds would be exaggerated - which is why the beats per minute should be counter over a minute otherwise you can say have 15 of the first 15 secs 20 over the second 10 over the third and 15 over the fourth which when multiplied up would give you BPM of 60, 80, 40 and 60 respectively. Blood pressure as a rough guideline tends to work out at 84 + age for the systolic reading (which is the first one) in which case you are spot on. Should also say that you should be sitting for 5 mins before blood pressure is read and also that machine do not record it that accurately and manual readings are more appropriate if you want to know the exact figure. Use the left arm also not the right.

Not bad for an old ******* :D

130/80
Resting heart rate 92

Lots of palpitations

So if I stop posting one day you will all know why. I should really medicate my self

That's not to bad for a resting heart rate, mine was 140 in my last pregnancy.

My heart rate is in the 60's now and BP is 110/65 Col_M but if i took my BP laying down it would drop 20.

My father though got taken in to hospital with a heart rate over 200.

Oh god, am goin to explode.. my blood pressure is terrible, V V V High

My bro got his done other day and it was perfect, and they still complained at him :/

A couple of days ago:
Blood Pressure: 112/77
Pulse: 59

But 2 weeks ago when in was seeing the GP it was 179/105, pulse 100.

I'm a white coat hypertensive and my bp rockets whenever I go to the Doctors :o Bought my monitor a few years back to confirm I didn't actually have really high blood pressure.

As has been mentioned it is recommended you sit quietly for 5-10mins before taking a reading to ensure you get a result that is "at rest".

You should take it three times in a row, whilst at rest and not after anything streneous, and then pick the lowest of the readings not the average.

You don't want the lower BP figure to be over 90, and you don't want the upper one over 140, ideally you should be 120/80 or less.
Resting pulse varies with levels of fitness and predisposition, cardio fit people will have a low resting pulse, 60 is a good rest.

Well, not to turn this into a medical thread but yeah, they put me on and Ace-i called Ramipril. When my dose was titrated up my BP came down. When I had it done last week it was 138/89, which is a massive improvement but still not ideal. They still dont know whats causing it though as I have no family history of it. All I can say, is that if you go for an Endoscopy, get sedation! I didnt and would rather have my finger nails pulled than have that done again :)

I too recently went to the doctors only to be told that my BP was in fact high at 169/82 at the time I had a fever which could have contributed to the elevated level. Over the next few weeks I would constantly monitor my BP at home and get readings all over the place from 172/88 to 134/77 lowest tended to be in the mornings at around 117/62.

I too have white coat issues as having the monitor fitted my pulse was around 137 so they carried out an ECG which was normal. My average 24 hour reading was 130/77 which apparently is acceptable.

Over the past few years I have had nothing but stress from work and my partner fighting Cancer along with a relocation to London.

The doctors said they only consider you to have a high BP when it is constantly reading above 160/90 and that the first number can related to stress and will come down. He also said the bottom number is the most important factor and mine was always under the threshold.
