Kick up a fuss over a ....... box?

Unless the contract says otherwise, I would imagine that the price you are paying covers only the shoes - the box is a bonus. Also, what is "damaged"? A scratch? The side kicked in? By all means try a grovelling letter pointing out that it was a present, but legally I think they owe you nothing.

I'm generally confused.

When yu buy a pc components are you only paying for the device and non of the accessories or packaging.
That's what b-grade stuff is with a discount. All parts might be there in perfect condition, but not the packaging.
 
If I was opening the present and the box was damaged I would assume that you bought a discounted pair due to the damaged box. Whether this would pee me off or not is a different question
 
If I was treating someone to something like that, I'd want the whole package to be in good condition. More so because it's a gift, but also because it's the impression you get, irrespective of whether the shoes are damaged or not.

So personally I'd query it.
 
As it was a gift and like you say, the box may even be needed for display and storage, i would request the shoes arrived in an undamaged box or the order is cancelled.

I would not want a discount.
 
No way, if I was paying £600+ I'd want the item and packaging in perfect condition. You are buying her an experience not a pair of shoes.

Like you say they will spend most of their time in the box taking a prominent position in the wardrobe and she'll get a little tickle of excitement each time she sees them. A battered box just won't have the same effect.

Assuming the wardrobe isn't already stuffed full of more expensive designer gear in which case bring on the battered box :p

how is the box a bonus? a lot of the time boxes for shoes , makeup etc are made for displaying in a bedroom , women NEED the box more than the actual contents they are very wierd
 
I'd say the box should be in perfect condition. Unless they were offering a considerable discount I wouldn't bother (it would have to be very sizeable to make it worth my while). Shoe boxes for designer shoes are effectively presentation boxes.

OK some here might say it's only the box, but I wonder how many people would spend hundreds on a watch or buy a very expensive blu-ray set and would be happy to receive it with a damaged box or case.

No, B grade means that it may be missing the other bits, but no-one knows. And I'm not talking about what a shop might do as a courtesy, I'm talking about strict liability.

OP, I wouldn't accept a damaged box for an item that was going to be a present nor would I ask for a discount. I would want it in pristine condition or not at all.

If it was for myself, on the other hand, I would. Because, as it happens, I took delivery of a damaged box from Our Lord OcUK when I purchased my CoolerMaster case. If the item itself had been damaged then obviously I would have sent it back.

got anything to back that up, especially when boxes for such items are display boxes and pretty integral to the product.If the advert says it will come with x-box then surly you are buying the box as per the advert and SOGA

At the end of the day, the box is still a part of the whole process of giving a gift. OK its not in all items, but designer stuff (i assume these are not everyday shoes?) always deserves to go back in nice piece of packaging... and again its the experience of it all, you will be disappointed to give that to her and although I doubt she would show it, it would take the shine off them.

What harm does a complaint do anyway? You are the customer and they should do their best to please you to keep you as one.

Ordinarily I wouldn't worry. However I don't really buy designer goods (sunglasses perhaps).

I do know that when you are paying lots of cash monies for designer stuff, a large part of what you are spending money on is the name. That name is most prominently displayed on the box, or so I'd imagine, as it's a pair of shoes.

I wouldn't feel happy giving a gift in damaged packaging, never mind obscenely priced footwear.
 
As it's a gift and presentation is seen as part of the thought, not to mention those sort of shoes cost 400-600 pounds I would ask for another box or a refund.
 
When I worked for a retail company, some customers really kicked up a stink about the boxes. Some were happy with any old box. However - the pricier the shoes, and the gravitas of the brand name, the more the customer wanted a pristine box.
When we came across a damaged box (which could have been damaged in storage, transit or by a previous customer sending it back for a refund) we always called the customer when we could, offering either a different box with the label crossed out or a small discount off the product. We also kept spare boxes in storage for these events - designers/brands could usually send spare boxes to us.

Definitely try to get some sort of discount. Alternatively, if you have a time limit; wait until you get the shoes, look at the state of the box and request a new one. They've probably made one heck of a sale through you and shouldn't even consider not replacing the box.

EDIT: Forgot to say, the box is considered 'part of the product'.

It would break the deal for me. The expensive shoe experience will be harmed, to a girl it is more than just the shoe, its the pretty box, the nice fabric bags the shoes come in, the excitement of seeing that branded pretty box will nearly be as much as the shoes them selves.. broken box and she will be disapoint and think you stole them.

find another pair on another site.
 
If you're spending that much on shoes I'd expect the box as well. Hell I'd expect the box gift wrapped and delivery to be free as well.
 
You absolutely should kick up a fuss. As makeshiftwings said, the box is part of the product and have the box with the designers name on etc is definitely part of the whole experience. They should at least be giving you a discount.
