Perhaps a silly question this. I currently use a Zotac GTX295 but want to upgrade to something a bit more upto date.

The GTX580 has things like DX11 etc which would be an improvement and my other hardware will be capable.

Is it worth the upgrade for an overall boost??

If your looking for a performance boost I think you would be disappointed, the extra VRAM on the 580 would come in handy for games like Crysis and Metro 2033 and your ears might thank you for the better HSF but if I were you I would waiting until the 28nm cards hit the market.

If you do want DX11 and better performance something like 2x 6950's/6970's 2Gb in crossfire or 2x 570's in SLI would be on the top of my shopping list.

If you're looking for something simply more up to date then wait for the 28nm cards. If performance with your 295 is lacking then fair enough, that is something different. I think the cheapest 580 is around £350 here, so if it were me I'd also consider the 570's. In terms of maximum frame rates, don't expect much diifference overall, minimums and averages is where you'll see the most benefit (as well as temps and noise).

Here is a rough comparison with a 295 v a 480 (295 v 580 comparison not available using this bench, there isn't much difference between the 480 and 580 anyway) :

I went from overclocked GTX260 SLI (similiar performance to GTX295) to a overclocked GTX470 and performance was broadly similiar - however due to lack of reliance on SLI the framerate was more consistant in most games making for smoother gameplay (nothing to do with microstutter) I'd say going from a stock GTX295 to a GTX580 you'd see a small but not insignificant performance increase and a decent increase in how smooth games play with much less drops to minimum fps/chugging in more intensive scenes.

I went from a 295 to 2x6950s. Big improvment in nearly everything, much smoother in general, I've only had maybe 2 driver issues that were fixed about a week later in the next catas.

Who knows when the 28nm's will be released. You're obviously asking because you want to upgrade, so you should just do it. Anyway while it probably wont be a massive jump, you're getting better performance in non SLI games, more VRAM for the rest, less power/heat/noise, plus you can try out some DX11! These aren't family hatchbacks, they're toys....nothing wrong with just wanting a new one even if it doesn't make complete sense!

A 580 will hold its price fairly well so even if the 600 series is released at the end of the year, you could sell and upgrade to that without making too much of a loss I'd expect.

Going against the crowd here but it's worth it imo.

+1 kind of

I upgraded from SLI GTX 275 to SLI GTX 580 and was well pleased with the performance boost....

(I know the op is only looking at getting a single GTX 580 but he be half way to the same upgrade as i did :p)

Thought nvidia 28nm cards were not coming out till early next year now

Theres no definite information either way atm, mixed messages at best but anywhere between late nov and march seem likely - the AMD fanboys are hyping every snippet of it being delayed as fact regardless of the source and nVidia is naturally telling their shareholders, etc. that its coming sooner rather than later.

Later the better..... ;)

Does anyone else just see the irony in his post? lulz! you Rroff are the biggest Nvidia fanboy going on OcUK! :p

Speaking as a neutral, I hope they come out late as possible so I get my moneys worth out of my GTX 580, I think they will come out ready to purchase before Christmas.

I'll most likely get MSI's next incarnation of Lightning card they launch.

wouldn't bother upgrading until it starts becoming a problem and since GTX 295 are still strong cards don't see why you would bother, still use 4870X2 and handles everything I use it for no issues at my monitors native resolution. what do you do with your system and at what resolution? don't see spending £350 on a 'newer' card being worth it if it offers marginally better performance. :)
