Don't get a diesel unless you really need to because of mileage. They are annoying and the equivalent petrols are generally nicer. My 535d isn't bad, but then it's twice as powerful as a 2.0 TDI 170 and far more refined. I'd still have a 540i if it didn't get much worse fuel economy.

Of course they do - purchase jusification syndrome and liking to feel like you are in control of your decisions/dont make them for purely financial reasons are why diesel owners are simply gushing to tell you how fast the 2 litre S-Line really isn't.
Don't get me wrong - overtaking is effortless unless you get some pillock racing you mid-overtake, and i've even had some B-road fun with mine.
But it's a 170ps diesel with a 0-60 of 8s flat. And whilst it's quick compared to a lot of the dross you tend to see on the roads these days, it's no rocket-ship.
It's not particularly economical either.

Because this is a discussion forum. His question was easily answered in one post - and I'm intruiged as to why he chose the engine he did given his usage profile, so I've asked him about it.

I have the 170bhp engine too.
I find it comfy motorway driving.
Worked out I do 460 miles a month just to work and the gym. I was doing a lot more when my g/f lived 30 miles away
I find 0-40mph isn't that quick, 40-70mph is where you get the power.

Overtaking is effortless? What?!
I had a 2.0TDI Golf 140 with a remap to take it to 185ish and that wasn't effortless overtaking, it was tedious because a) it wasn't effortless and b) the gear ratios are crap/powerband too small.
After that I had the Alfa Romeo 159 2.0 170ps diesel. On the road with no other cars, felt fairly reasonable. Overtaking was not "effortless" though.
Maybe I have a different perception of effortless to you but effortless doesn't even happen in my S-Class. Effortless overtakes happen when you have bucketloads of power in reserve, something not found in 170ps diesel A4s. Sorry.
EDIT:
To address the actual thread, fill the tank to the brim and visit the petrol station less. Not only is this the only sane way to behave but you also get a nice psychological gap between fillups to convince yourself running a car isn't as bad as you think.

My recent trip to Birmingham worked out about 53mpg, that was flooring it down the motorway as I was late for a wedding lol
Apparently it's supposed to average 48mpg

It's all relative really. I find my 535d reasonably effortless, but I'm sure someone with an S65 AMG would find it a pain to get going!

I've definitely come to realise that 4 pot diesels are the devil's invention, even though mine is now at it's maximum of about 155bhp it's still clattery, unrefined and downright noisy.
Luckily the car is light meaning it's quick enough, but doing 400 miles a week is no reason to put up with a 4 pot diesel.
If I was doing 400 miles, I'd be in a V6 or V8 again.

Try having a 1.6 diesel as fitted in my Leon Ecomotive, then you'll know sluggish.
It's ok most of the time, but when you put your foot down and need to shift...it just doesn't!

What a list. No wonder you think its a nice drive. How come its the only A4 you've ever driven? Surely you test drove other models in the A4 range as well to decide on the right one?
A nice 1.8T would be good.
