Idiots who tailgate

No but it can stop quicker than the person behind me who by the time he or she has thought ohh that car im tailgating has slammed on id better brake. oops bang.

Are you sure about that in every case? (what do you drive, btw?)

If that happened to me I would enjoy cashing in my whippy compo cheque and going on holiday ;) An overall better experience than driving everywhere on the brink of an aneurism because of something that really doesn't matter that much anyway...

I mean seriously, what is going on in these people's brains ?

"get out of the ****ing way you slowcoach" most probably.

Just oblige them and slow down at an overtaking spot and let them go tailgate somebody else.

If you don't give them room, they'll only only end up pulling a rash manoeuvre somewhere and kill you both.

Absolutely. Every single time you don't move over, someone dies.

Exactly this.

A red Nissan Micra :D, Audi A4 3.0 quattro avant.
I appreciate what your saying, if your covering the brake pedal and slowing down before the car in front etc, it's the people who don't.

Just give a sharp tap of the brake ;)

How responsible! Let's react to "could be considered dangerous" with "let's do our level best to cause a pileup".

Got to admit, I do this sometimes if on my own, normally does the trick, kinda wakes em up ;)

Shouldn't be tailgating then

BOTH of you are much worse than 99.9% of those that are perceived to be tailgaters.

Even though it was a joke, it still holds true.

An obstacle appears ahead of you, you need to press the brake. The tailgater goes into you.

Again, joke.

However, if some idiot wants to tailgate me then he should be prepared for whatever may happen.
It is their risk. Oh, and I'm not saying I am going to press the break just making a point

I honestly cba to go into the maths of this but your thinking distance isn't as far as you'd think, plus even then you are only going to have a relatively small speed differential if you do touch.

Put it this way, if things have gone so massively wrong that I am performing an emergency stop on the motorway I would rather be hit by someone that was driving 6ft from my rear bumper and didn't see me start to brake than someone that was half a mile back and didn't see me brake.

I usually slow down if someone is uncomfortably close.

I have found though that it happens loads in the Focus, but goes away completely if the 'Baby on board' sign is in the back. So there is your answer - get a Baby on board sign :)

what im trying to get across is the best way to avoid the stress is just to let them pass.

If they're on a death wish and want to drive like a nutter, let 'em do so further up the road out of your way.

Except the fire brigade will waste time looking for a baby that doesn't exist if you are involved in a pile-up...

thats BS

they aren't going to go on a sign in the back. They will ask witnesses and/or yourself if there was anybody else in the car.

Its not going to be "quick, we must run back to the buring remains of your car, i think i can make out the charred remains of a baby on board sign, there must be a baby on board !!!"

unless you're watching sirens.

its completely wrong but if someone persists to tailgate me after ive slowed down then i put the rear fogs on. they are so bright people back off pretty quick.

If you think its bad in the UK you should see how the muppets in Massachusetts drive. I was doing 70 in the outside lane in the Hummer and some idiot in a lowered car was about 12" off my bumper. I couldn't even see him in the rear view mirror, only noticed him when i looked in my side mirrors.
