I know the Aego's are more expensive but what are they worth the extra? Ive currently got an old but decent IBM 2.1 setup and only really use them for listening to music through itunes while working.

Or would it be better to go for the Edifier's AND a sound card? If so what sound card would be best suited?

Thanks

Edifier's probably produce an over all better sound, but obviously can't match the Aego's or any 2.1 set, for bass. Unless you are into bass heavy music, I'd probably say the Edifier's are the better choice.

Thanks, just listen to commercial stuff really, bit of indie, bit of rock but nothing like dubstep which needs mega bass. Currently listening to Adele :p if that gives you a better idea for a recomendation

Hard to beat the Edifiers without spending a lot of money in terms of clarity and balance through most of the range but as above they are a bit lacking in terms of pure bass.

I have the Aegos but i havent heard the Edifiers, though they do seem to be really good value.

Are you all saying that the Edifiers sound better than the aegos as i find that hard to believe as they are half the price?.

I assume you have all compared both set of speakers to form this view?

What i can say OP as i do own some Aegos they are sublime speakers with a very clear sound, added with decent bass, without sounding like a boom box.

Edit:Though as with all decent speakers a decent dedicated soundcard is needed and not relie on on-board sound,as this wont give the best results, far from it.

Will go for the Edifiers then, would there be much benefit in a dedicated sound car for speakers in this price bracket?

Not compared them side by side, but the Edifiers are very good - if it wasn't for some low frequency colorisation and being relatively unknown as a brand they could command a much higher price tag.

The downside IMO if your used to high end speakers they are much harder to accept for what they are than more average speakers - they do really well most of the time but they let go just enough to remind you they aren't £300 per speaker.

I also own the Aegos.

The problem with a 2.1 set is they often are lacking in the midrange because of the satellites usually being small. In contrast, the Edifiers will probably have a better midrange, but lack the bass authority the Aego subwoofer gives.

While we are on the subject of Aegos i have a question, hope the OP dosent mind :)

Im trying to connect a 3rd speaker to my Aegos(have a spare) but i havent got the correct lead to connect to the centre speaker on the back of the amp and then into my soundcard?

I have the lead to connect the speaker to the back of the amp black and red connectors, but not to the centre connection and then into my soundcard.

I have loads of leads here but none are the correct leads, what lead do i need guys?

when i got the edifiers i also got the xonar DG, tryed them with the on bord sound first then put the sound card in and played the same tracks, was a noticeable difrence defo worth the extra £20.

You would need a 3.5mm jack to RCA/phono cable, then just connect the relevant RCA plug into the Aego's. Connecting is fine, however this is where 3.1 is flawed. In order to get sound from the centre channel, you would need to select 5.1, so that sound is sent to the centre channel, as when 2.0/2.1 is selected, no sound is sent to the centre channel. The problem with doing this is, when 5.1 is selected, the bass is sent to the subwoofer channel, which is shared with the centre channel, but you will have nothing connected to it. In 2.0/2.1, all frequencies are sent through the same channel, and the crossover in the subwoofer unit, would separate the bass sent to the sub and the higher frequencies sent to the satellites. That is why 3.1 is flawed, and IMO, totally pointless. I don't know quite how AE expected it to work TBH.

Ah thats disappointing then, but thanks the info.

If the sound card can send the bass to the left and right channels, as it would when 2.0/2.1 is selected, it would work. AFAIK, there are no options to do that though.

They would definitely sound better than the Aegos for music. They have 4.5inch drivers, compared to the 2 inch (and no tweeters) or something drivers the Aegos have. Andrew Moore did compare the two, and he preferred the Edifiers for music.

Not compared them side by side, but the Edifiers are very good - if it wasn't for some low frequency colorisation and being relatively unknown as a brand they could command a much higher price tag.

I think if they were just a little bigger, then the bass could be much better. Any 2.0's I have heard that don't have atleast 5 or 5.25 inch drivers have lacked in the bass department. I just keep the bass slightly below the middle mark now, and I'm pretty satisfied with the result as I'd rather have less bass than fake bass.

A decent sound card would definitely help (get either a Xonar DS or DX if you're on a budget).

The Aego M's are amazing speakers for the size of the satellites and the construction quality is second to none but It is hard to beat the Edifiers for sheer value. The edifiers are probably a little better for music and the Aego for games/films but you wont be dissapointed with either.

If your listening to music, i'd deffo go with a 2.0 setup; i hate listening to music on a 2.1 setup!

The edifiers then would be your best choice; i nearly bought them but they were too big for my table so ended up ordering a pair of Audioengine A2's; they arrive tomorrow so will post some views.

2.1 isn't that bad for music, the problem is that PC speakers are usually rubbish, small subs don't even go that low and are of poor build/design, small speakers with poor crossovers points etc.... okay 2.1 is bad for music unless you have a lot of money!
