If I was looking to buy say an RX8, am I right in saying if it was registered in 2007, the road tax would be a lot more than if it was registered in 2006?

What is the magic date when road tax goes up?

Also, if you buy an imported car, say made in 2003, what's the deal with that? ie: If it was registered in the UK in 2006 or 2007 does it make a difference to road tax?

Tax laws are stupid.

S2000 '55' plate = £215
S2000 '56' plate = £430

Ahh! So the magic date is "before 23 March 2006"... So if get a car registered before that date, it'll save you a few hundred pounds a year! (Assuming it's a high tax group)

And if you're talking about an imported car, if it was manufactured in 2003, but imported in 2005, or 2007, does that change it's road tax?

Heres a funnier one, because the Mazda RX-7 only has a 1.3L engine they cost £130 a year to tax, if the were on sale today the disc would be £460 ^^

Didn't they change it so they taxed on the effective cubic centimetres had it been a 'normal' engine?

Well if they did they fail at it because my friend is def charged the lower bracket for his, its something of much jealousy in our friendship circle (we all have 300bhp+ 90's Jap cars), how exactly did they work out the comparison to a "normal" engine? iirc the RX7 uses twin 650cc rotors but I dunno how that converts to "normal" engines.

I'm getting stung by the March 2001 engine size / CO2 change.

If my 1.9 tdi 110 BHP Octavia was a year younger I'd be getting charged £115 instead of £215 :(

The daft thing is, as I usually run on 50-75% commercial biodiesel made from used cooking oil, my CO2 emitted from non-renewable sources is probably less than a Prius...

I keep finding myself browsing the used car classifieds as my tax is coming up in a month and a half...

Road tax is absolutely ridiculous. It should be scrapped and incorporated into fuel duty.

The more you use your car, the more fuel you need, the more you pay.
The less efficient your car, the more fuel you need, the more you pay.
The more fumes your car emits... etc

^^ I completely agree!! Would also save loads of money streamlining two systems into one!
