Change of career (at 30+)

I know you don't want to hear it but, two words... Male Gigolo
I had to say it. If I didn't someone else would have.

Anyway, search google for exotic jobs. I've been looking at island care taker, bed tester etc :D YOU GOT TO HAVE A DREAM

What does being a temp pay in Cornwall? It might be an idea to give you a change and experience different companies and jobs on a fairly regular and rapid basis to see if there is anything that particularly appeals. Although if being an IT tech earns you under £16k there then being a temp probably isn't all that well paid either.

Just as a general way of narrowing things down slightly - do you prefer working in an office environment or would you like to try a more hands on (and possibly outdoors) trade? At the moment it's difficult to offer suggestions as it's so general - sometimes being amenable to trying almost anything doesn't make it easy to focus.

FoxEye, look into getting on the railway. If 25k is your target in 7-8 years, you'll be pleased to know that you would've earned that during the next financial year. I'm talking contracting, not going 'on the cards' with a company as in this climate, you have better chance becoming the king of England.

What you need is to contact a railway recruitment company and offer to pay for your own PTS (needed) card. About £200 iirc. Companies like

TXM
Morson Wynnwith
Mane Rail
Leda
Vital

etc. Google them, you'll find 100's. They'll sponsor you as it's risk free since you pay for your own PTS. Saying that, if you're not an idiot, they'll probably pay for you themselves. You gotta do 6 months as a 'blue hat' (a newb) first before you can go for more 'tickets' to increase your earnings.

No, I don't work on there myself but in our contracts we hire a lot of those people in. It really is not uncommon for people to pull in a grand a week, if not more. Work is easy as pie and the people working class and funny.

What do you do for a hobby? what magazines do you read? what programs do you watch that makes you think 'i'd like to do that'?
I'm sorry but nothing comes to mind. Believe it or not I don't have any hobbies; neither do I read anything these days (do forums count?) or watch any non-fiction TV programmes.

You think that you need direction, you need to help people point you in the right direction :p

Probably need a kick up the ass more than anything. Or a push. I'm hopeless! And I do apologise for being difficult.

doing what on the railways though?

I think I'd like to escape the office and try something different. All my work has been office work, and I can't say I've ever had a feeling of satisfaction at the end of the day.

What railway people do best. Nothing @ 50% of the time. I think Acidhell works for NWR, he can probably tell you better.

We get Engineering Supervisors, Cranies and Coss's in for our construction works on the railways. Coss's and ES's do nothing more than stand about. Literally.

I'm in a very boring do nothing job at the moment, I want to kill myself I'm so bored at times. Hence the spamming of the forums. Don't persuade him to stand around :P

I'm afraid the job is not very stimulating but at least it pays better what he's on now, he'll have more time to himself to pursue hobbies and perhaps ... dare I ...? a degree (runs away!)

Ok, that's at least giving you a starting point then as you know some occupations you'd probably like to avoid. Being able to point out what you want to avoid can sometimes be a good beginning if the choice is large.

Do you have the time to commit to learning a trade/skilled/semi-skilled occupation or do you want/need something more urgently than that? Bear in mind of course that while you may initially earn more at a job you can just walk into the payback is usually later (and can be significant) for more skilled occupations.

Have you thought about working offshore? One of my mates went to a form of college to do this - the company paid for his studies there and gave him a little bit of pocket money but he was pretty much always broke during the two years or so he was doing it, now I believe he's beginning to see the benefits as there's relatively little to spend your money on while you're a couple of dozen miles into the North Sea. I've got to confess that I don't know what the entry requirements are or anything like that but it's something you may wish to investigate.

Didn't take your fancy?

Forces, no. I'm a peacer ;)

Police, fire... I suppose. Don't they have rather exacting standards of their recruits?

I'd have to lie through me teeth to get into the Police. Right after they asked "So why do you want to join us?"

Because I don't think "earning more money without a degree" will be looked upon particularly favourably by their recruiters :p

OP I can sympathise I'm in a similar boat 33, currently run my own business but if I'm honest it's a struggle and pretty depressing, could do with a change!

Good luck FoxEye, I'll be following the thread for ideas as well :)

Just lie like everyone does. I was asked by I wanted to be a in civils. An honest answer would've been 'I don't. It pays well so I'll do it'. Simple.

Do whatever you want. I up and moved to the middle east on a whim, quitting my job earning a sizeable amount to earn next to nothing doing what i enjoy. Granted, i have no responsibilities after i sold the car etc, but it was still the best thing i ever did. Now i'm 27 and i'm starting university full time for the first time in september.

If something makes you happy, do it. If it doesn't work out, at least you gave it a shot. Travel the world a bit and you'll realise how lucky you are. You're an educated Western guy with a British passport (you have no idea how valuable that is) who can create opportunities to change your life completely.

Do it.
