So I'm getting a company car and have been told I can have 'something like a Golf TSI 1.4'...so looking at a list price around 18.5K. My mum has the exact same Golf already and I like it as a car, but its been mentioned the Golf is due a new model out soon? and want to make sure I look at the alternatives.

What other models should I be looking at around that price bracket?

Quite like the look of the Alfa Guillietta...anyone have any opinion on that?

Mainly will be driving it commuting, main place of work will be 1 hour drive, 75% of the way along countryish A-roads.

Company cars are more often than not done on a business lease. So instead of looking at list price, you actually need to be looking at a combination of emissions, BIK and list price I think.

The new Golf came out last year and is a good 5-6 years away from a replacement.

Quite a large number of companies use P11D value, which is basically list price, to grade the cars and show you which ones you are entitled to. Therefore its entirely appropriate to look at list price, because he probably has a max P11D he's entitled to.

There was an article in autocar last week saying the Mk7 Golf is out next year, suprised me tbh, since I didn't think this one had been out that long

Why would they bring out a new Golf so soon? The Mk6 is a massive improvement over the Mk 5 and it's only been out 2 years

Yes, why do that? That's one thing about VW I liked. They kept the same style for a number of yrs unlike others, so your car never dated so quick.

Bad move from VW IMHO

I think the Mk6 shares the same door frames, roof and is the same wheelbase, so its not completely new, but I can't see a new Golf being released anytime soon.

I think you may struggle to get them to agree to a Guilietta - due to almost all company car policies taking not only purchase price, but also emissions, perhaps resale (not sure what they do with it at the end of the three year or whatever policy?).

Also, AFAIK, VW have deals going with many major companies for their company car policies, so you'll get a higher spec'ed VW than other cars despite street price differences.

I'm reasonbly sure you could snag yourself a Seat Exeo for that, the list price of the base car is slightly higher, but I have seen them being sold at a good discount quite a few times. They are nice alround cars, well bascially a facelifted old shape Audi A4.

P11D value is king with company cars, could be 10k cheaper on deals but still small chance of him getting one.

Boss got some quotes this morning and the Alfa and the Golf are coming in at similar prices based on 3 years, 20K miles PA, maintenance contract. This is for either Golf 1.4TSI Match, 1.6TDI Bluemotion Match, Guillieta 1.4 Lusso or 1.6 JTDM Lusso.

On the BIK cost the Alfa diesel was cheapest but not much between that and the bluemotion, the Alfa petrol is the most expensive, the cost difference to me would be about £15 a month from the cheapest to the most expensive. Might have to see if I can grovel for the multiair version of the Alfa

The quotes are from the contract hire companies we usually use in our company but probably going to check out what the dealers can offer as well, my Boss is getting himself an E350 convertible and the local merc dealer was about £100 a month cheaper

Have ended up getting the Guilietta 1.4 Multiair Lusso in Etna Black :d Unfortunately looks like I'll have to wait till end of August for it but getting delivery date confirmed tomorrow I think. Going to be a massive improvement on my Swift :)

The MK6 was essentially a facelift of the MK5, was it not?

No, it looks similiar but apart from that VW consider a totally new model.

Expect a facelift after 3/4 years and a replacement after 6-8 years as per other Golf models.

I don't think it's been out 2 full years either.

Wikipedia states they are built on the same platform, so it's not really a new car at all?

Car magazine called it "a very thoroughly facelifted Mk5".

So the MK5/MK6 platform is now 6 years old? 7 next year - ripe for replacement, and hardly surprising tbh?

Every panel was different in the Focus facelift in 2008, as well as new interiors, options and some engine changes, but no one called that a new car.

I'm 99% sure there will not be a brand new Golf in a years time, the MK6 was considered a new car by VW, and not a facelift.

The Fiat Stilo and Fiat Bravo were built on the same platform, they are different cars.

Car magazine could call the MK6 Golf a space rocket but it wouldn't be one.
