Insurance on an R34 guesstimate?

So I'm looking at potential new cars costing no more than 10k, all of which will be highish when it comes to insurance. The cars are:

Nissan Skyline R34 GTT with numerous mods circa 400hp
E46 BMW M3 (dont think my budget will get me a decent one?)
Mitsubishi EVO VIII FQ300
Subaru WRX STI with PPP 2005 model

I've never driven any of the above and have been driving a modified 306 gti-6 for the past 5 years. I'm now 33 and think it is time I upgraded to something a little nicer with a bit more power than the 190hp I currently have. Based on looks and what the car is the Skyline is my first choice to own on that list. I shall be calling tomorrow to obtain a quote but was wondering if anyone had any rough idea what I'll be looking at? I'm hoping for circa £800 or less.

I'm 33, male, average postcode I believe
Car will have cat 1 security plus tracker
Garaged
Clean license / no convictions / claims
7500 miles per year max, (I've only done 2500 so far this year as I cycle a lot)
400hp with mods
2000 plate R34 GTT Skyline

I have had some email traffic with skyinsurance who pointed out that skylines have a high claim rate. I never see any on the road where I live, guess they are all parked in hedges somewhere?! Anyone on here have an R34 or experience in trying to insure Skylines?

No one can really tell you because there are so many variables with insurance. Just go to some comparison sites to get a rough idea.

oh no wait that is how long is a piece of string…….although probably easier to answer.

can’t you just go on a price comparison site, would have taken you the same length of time to write this post?

oh and you may have a 10k budget but are you comfortable running any of the above? The Subaru will be most palatable.

I wouldn't bother with a GTT out of that lot. M3 is a completely different drive to Evo and Scooby. Evo is sharper out of the box than the STi but you will get an older car for the money. STi has a more old school turbo power delivery with nothing nothing nothing... boost! Evo is smoother and more responsive.

I would consider a JDM 2005 STi for that money personally :)

I'm puzzled by your list given you have not driven any of them?

I'd love an e46 M3 for example, why? - I've driven one - a few actually - & loved it.

The rubbish ones are.

I would not say this is the case. R34 GTT's that are rubbish are around the £5k mark at the moment. Of course an R34 GTR would be the ultimate but these do still command a high price.

I do appreciate there are numerous variables I was only really after what other owners are currently paying, no matter.

The particular car I am looking at from the advert would appear to be owned by an enthusiast and had a lot of money spent on. All mods were fitted by Abbey motorsport which is known for being a decent Skyline tuner in the UK. I do appreciate there is always a risk when purchasing a modified car however. I have not been to see the car yet as if the insurance quote is insanely high there is little point in me wasting the fuel to go and view it.

It would be hard to get test drives in these type of cars. I guess there may be some EVO VIIIs and 2005 Scoobys on the forecourts of some dealers? Last time I went to a BMW dealer showing interest in purchasing a 330ci a few years ago when I had some cash I felt like I was being talked down to by the salesman and that the car was above me! Maybe turning up in my peugeot which isnt exactly quiet didnt help there? As for getting a test drive in a Skyline, no idea on that one.......

As for running costs, I've been researching and the RB engine in the GTT is a pretty solid engine as long as you dont take it too far on the tuning front. As said the list of mods carried out on the particular Skyline I am looking at are very comprehensive and not the case of some numpty simply trying to up the boost a bit.

I am not overly worried about being able to do a million miles per hour round a corner so much these days. I want a weekend toy, preferably with a turbo as I have always wanted to dable on the turbo scene, that looks good and is a little exclusive. The Skylines have a really smooth running engine that does sound really nice too.

I'm not overly worried about running costs. As long as I can still put circa £250 into savings each month I'll be OK. This year OT has been good and I've been piling in £850 - £1k each month so far. I have based my calculations on flat rate and still believe I can put that £250 a month away in savings.

I know the answer but I'm still confused as to why that R34 is for sale for £30k when the R35 prices are dropping to £40k and some even lower than that!

Suspect you may need a bit more than 250pm to keep it running nice and you would want a 2-3k reserve in case of any major mechnicals even if it has minimal use.

because they sell at that price..

Isn't the R34 quite a bit cheaper to run than the new GTR and easier to live with for this reason, along with a notable fan following?
