Insurance on an R34 guesstimate?

It certainly won't be cheap to run, cheaper perhaps, but then if you're after cheap running costs you probably want to spend a bit less than £30k on a car.

I take that the £250 per month to keep it running would include fuel? I've accounted for that seperately. I have already thought about break downs and there is an ample enough pot there ready to be used 'if' required.

It will not have that much use, I suspect the mileage to be much closer to 5k in a year than the 7.5k i've mentioned. I would insure it at that in case I end up driving some distance in the UK to go on holiday for example. Based on that mileage I would think that two oil changes per year would suffice. I haven't actually looked up the service intervals yet but I'd let a specialist carry out the full services so it keeps some history.

Tyres would be the pricey as they GTT I'm looking at has genuine GTR original spec wheels which are slightly bigger. Whilst I will enjoy the car from time to time tyre wear can be kept to a minimum when not having that fun. I do appreciate that they will wear a lot quicker than my current tyres.

HOW MUCH NO CLAIMS, my boss has a r32 running that n hes 40 n hes paying like £600.
yeh his does 20mph which ISN'T a lot. :S

I've driven none of them!!

I know they are quite different to each other. The Evo and Scooby will be a lot more fun when it comes to the twisties and easier cars to drive harder. The M3 has no turbo and whilst I do really like them I would still like to go the turbo route for a while. My brother had a 300ZX twin turbo and I drove that. The power delivery on that was great, until it went pop on him. G/F really likes the M3, I haven't shown her the R34 yet as I think I know what the reaction will be :D

I have 6 years NCB and no points / convictions / claims etc. I think max discount is gained at 5 years so that isn't an issue. The car and the amount people make claims against them is what will drive the premium up. I was advised that Supras and RX7s are much better on the wallet when it comes to insurance.

If anything a Supra or RX7 is going to be cheaper to insure than a Skyline.

Anyway, worrying about a few hundred quid either way when it comes to insuring this sort of car is a little bit silly.

Go drive them all dude! A lot of fun to be had there, trying out different cars etc! Don't forget the 200SX too, even the Soarer, to keep Joshy happy. :p

RX-8, Integra, Elise? and S2000 should be worth considering too.

You wouldn't spend £10k on clothes without trying them on so why spend that much on a car before trying the others? :)

I was looking at 200SX's but they dont have quite the same appeal as an R34. Finding one with lowish miles on it that has been owned by someone who would appear to be more of an enthusiast isn't that easy either. I did also take a look at S15's but you're looking at about £8k - £10k for a standard one. Not sure it was a Silvia I was looking at, I think it was the S15a model that I liked the look of.

I know how much of a money pit tuning is, I've always dabbled with all of my bikes and my current car. That is why I am after one that has been modified tastefully already so save me taking that hit. Could be my downfall though as the engine could go pop on me but I'll be giving Abbey Motorsport a call before making a deal to see what they think of the car.

As for the other cars:

RX-8, seems a little bit bland to me, not special enough, no turbo what is tax on these?
Integra DC5, Love them and have driven one of these. Very cammy but an amazing N/A engine. Lacking serious grunt however and no turbo
S2000, Not driven, have heard insurance is really bad on these too. Like the looks, again great engine but it is still N/A. Again maybe lacking the grunt I'm after
Elise, only just about have budget for an S2 I think. If I was after a track car then one of these would be higher on the list. Not sure it suits what I'm after at the mo.
350Z, Like these too. Seem to be a lot of car for the money as well. Have two friends who each own one of these. Not turbo but it does have grunt.

Not keen on the Soarer, not to be horrible but isnt that just a wafty type barge with a Supra engine in it? I'm sure it goes well and is reliable too as I know the Supra engine is a tough nut but it just doesn't do it for me.

My current car is very cammy due to the modifications I have made to it. I've had a good dose of a cammy N/A engine for the past 5 years hence the reason I'm after something with a little more grunt / oomph. That plus the fact I'm 33 and in 3 years time I may well be up and leaving the UK and if that happens owning something like this will not happen for many many years if ever at all.

I agree I wouldnt buy clothes without trying them on, except pants and socks of course :D Whilst I havent driven many cars based on experiences from my bike days there is enough information out there to gauge roughly what a car / bike will handle / perform like. After that it comes down to whether the car appeals to me, what its major faults are, how reliable is it, running costs etc etc.

Skylines are ridiculous to insure. a lot of people overlook the GTT but they are very capable cars. They work on a similar formula to the supra, straight six engine, turbo and rwd. It's just that the GTR is better :p

The trouble with reading about cars is, whilst you might get a good idea of how the car behave,s you really won't know if you like it until you drive it. You might not like the driving position, the feedback, the handling etc.

What about the Rx7?

This is the particular R34 I am looking at. The colour is like Marmite, luckily for me I think yellow is great :D I also think that is works well on the R34. It would be Yellow or White for me. I'm trying to source some interior shots as I want to see how the TV things are mounted, I'm not fussed about these at all just dont want it to be a bodge job. I also want to see the Recaro seats as I'm not sure they are standard. I'm hoping the owner will also have the original spoiler struts but I'm not holding my breath. Fortunately the Nismo struts aren't that bad.

As I'm sure you're aware, your budget does buy a proper (GTR) Skyline?

Although I have to say, all of the worrying about Tax band and insurance is a little bit concerning. As has been mentioned before, these aren't really the type of cars you should be looking at if a extra £100 or so a year on Tax is going to appear on your radar.

Just look into costs IN DEPTH before committing or else it could all end in tears.

I agree the GTR is the better car. If I could afford one there would be no question as to which I'd be getting!!

Sigma you are right in what you are saying. Driving position can be found out when I go to take a look at it, if I do that is. I guarantee it cannot be any worse than my 306! I am hoping it would be similar to that of my brothers 300ZX which was really nice, as was the DC5 I test drove. Feedback would be interesting. The 306 does have great feedback, a nice heavy feel which I do like. My brothers 300ZX was so light it didn't inspire that much confidence as to what the car was doing. Handling wise as I said I'm not planning on tracking it or taking roundabouts with the tyres squealing trying to hang the back end out. Some may say the car would be wasted by not doing this but fun can always be had before you get to those extremes :) It would be nice to find an R34 on a forecourt that I could take for a spin. Sadly with it not having the same suspension mods it could handle totally different!

Rx7 looks nice. Rotary engine does put me off a little. I'd have to buy one that has been re-tipped recently. Is it at about the 60k mark this has to be done? I read up on these some time ago but have forgotten now.

To me the R34 has more road presence, a better stance. It's just the car that is most floating my boat at the moment and I have the money to do something about it.

I was looking at 200SX's but they dont have quite the same appeal as an R34.

Sorry to keep banging on about it, but I still don't get this idea of "appeal".

Take the 200SX for example, a lot of people think they can handle better than the Skyline because they're lighter and more nimble but also parts are cheaper and they're cheaper to buy.

That's just one example. You might drive the M3 and realise that it's a much nicer place to be and whilst it might not have a turbo you might find that it's just as fun to drive so worth saving up to find a good one.

If it was my £10k I'd be trying every car under the sun. Does a Z4M fall with in budget?

Edit - I'm not saying don't buy an R34, far from it, I'm just saying be sure it's 100% the one for you.

You are right the tax wouldnt bother me, just all the other cars are cheaper so that extra £140 can be put towards insurance.

My friend at work has been saying that an R33 GTR may be the better choice of the two as well. It just doesnt look as nice though. Whilst I do have a bit of cash and enough to keep the car maintained to a high standard I just detest paying masses for insurance. At 26 I had a Suzuki Hayabusa that had 880hp/ton and that only cost me £500 to insure. I know its not a 1.4ton hunk of metal but it could get you into trouble just as quickly, if not easier. I dont think I'll ever accelerate on or in a road vehicle that I own as quick as that thing did ever again. I managed three winters on that too, those icy mornings were scary times.
