Basically I'm starting my computing diploma soon, and will know more about what I want to do later on when I finish the course, but simply I was curious as to which jobs in IT shine as being particularly... well....bad, in terms of salary and dead end'ness.

At the minute my current interests are something like Website dev/programming and/or Software engineering...

Any responses appreciated

I've been told that Software Engineering is incredibly hard to get into (on a job sense).

Web dev is also pretty hard to get into, there aren't a lot of web folks needed in each organisation, so there aren't a huge number of posts around when compared to support roles. Doesn't mean there won't be in 3 or 4 years though!

Software dev and web dev jobs can be difficult to get into, mainly because a lot of people apply and only the few that show some good potential and skill and understanding get in. However at current unless you can get onto a Graduate scheme, with training for a few months, the best wages you are looking at are £18,000 - 22,000. It's a bit annoying as when I started Uni the average wage was a good 2 - 4 grand above that for a decent graduate.

If you can get into an apprenticeship or a Graduate scheme I suggest giving it a good look into. I have secured a job as an application developer, but I am still looking into Grad schemes, for the simple fact they offer better training and more money and all I have to do is get my ass out of my current city and closer to the location.

Kinda on topic, does anyone know a good website for finding graduate IT schemes? Google has spat out some terrible websites :S and it's mostly damn recruitment consultancy

Few thoughts from me...

From what you have said i'm assuming you mean a BTEC Diploma 2 year type course and you're not planning on going to university.

If that's the case software development as a career will probably be pretty hard to break into.

More fundamentally than that, if you aren't sure now what you want to do I would just use the next two years or so to find out what you enjoy and what you are good at.
