Thinking of renting a place in Leicester, but not sure which areas are decent and which are grotty.

All I know is that "Highfields" is to be avoided and I ideally want something within 30 mins walk of the center if possible.

Any tips/suggestions for surviving Leicester? :D

Freemans Meadows is a big complex of flats, which although nice may not be appropriate.

Within Leicester City itself you will want to be in Stoneygate or possibly Clarendon Park. Might be barely longer than 30mins walk.

Unfortunately the LE2 postcode is massive and covers a big variety of areas so its hard to filter housing searches.

Clarendon Park is OK, steer clear of Evington. Round by the stadiums seems ok, but these are the only places I've had first hand experience of.

Clarendon Park Road area is okay, as some people say, and it's easily within 30 mins walk of the centre if you're a reasonably swift walker. Narborough Road is extremely studenty, but there are some nice places west of Fosse Rd South, and off Hinckley Road nearish the centre.

Avoid the Narborough Road area, I lived there last year and got burgled and my mate got mugged.

I've heard that Narborough road is basically the red light district of Leicester . :D

Thanks for the pointers though. I'm just looking for something cheap for 6 months where I'm not going to be stabbed. :D (and isn't too far from the center).

Jeez, guys, the Narb is just student town. It's not especially dangerous. I've no doubt you get some crime here and there, and burglaries are probably somewhat above average as they are in most student areas in most cities (expensive gadgets, laptops, etc, and no home security...). But it's hardly Lozells or Moss Side...

Having said that, I'd much rather move my family to Clarendon Park Road, or some of the surrounding areas near Vicky Park, or somewhere a bit west of Fosse Rd South.

west end and the narbs is ok, just avoid saffron lane area, beaumont leys, new parks, highfields, parts of glenfield, mow acre and rowlats hill, braunstaone town. Some of these are really scummy. Basically the big housing estates
I'm near west end (narb rd/fosse rd north) and it's ok, not much crime, lots of polish hehe.

Only area of leic I've not lived in is knighton area up london road. Anywhere near demont or leic uni will be crawling with students, so that includes clarendon park/welford road.

Anywhere beyond the ring road will be more than 30 mins to town centre.

you mean highfields and st mathews estate ;)
... just so'ws you know, alright ;) ;)

:D

as said above try to avoid saffron lane, however aylestone itself is a reasonable area. Plenty of flats/houses in grace road and the surrounding areas.

Where's the boundary? Also, what's The Fairway (off Saffron Lane) like, Bloomfield Road looked reasonable - but it's so hard to tell 'til you've lived in a place.

(I'm moving to Leicester too)

difficult to say as saffron lane is part of the aylestone area, but i would say between aylestone road and saffron lane is fine.
The fairway is ok depending on whereabouts you are on it, starts getting worse as you head towards windley road, I currently live very close to the fairway.
Moving soon to eyres monsell which used to have a bad reputation, however these days is a much nicer place to live, bit too far out of Leicester for the op though i think

Just been speaking to someone who's got a place that sounds decent. It's near 'Anstey Lane' if anyone knows if that area is decent?

They said it was only 7-8 minutes walk from the center, which sounds ideal, assuming not a scummy area.

As echo'd above, avoid Narborough as it truly is brothel/prostitute centre, similarly it's not great to live near Braunstone.

I used to work in Evington and would also avoid that like the plague, but Clarendon Park Road is decent enough and there a quite a few decent pubs on Queens Rd like the Clarendon, Dos Hermanos, and Olives.

Anstey lane runs near and through a small part of beaumont leys, it depends on which part of it. 7-8 mins walk I would think is near blackbird road which is not too bad at all.

Anstey Lane is fine,if its only 7/8 minutes from town it will be near the bottom end, should be ok.
