i used to get faster speeds with sky broadband unlimited but not i average 320KB/s (speed read off newsleecher), i gave up pestering sky, i even tried on here but i could not get anything to get my speed back to where it was.

my sky broadband has been really reliable and i can download as much as i want and never hear anything about my downloads from sky.

should i try one of the other LLU providers to see if i can get a faster speed or do these others in my area give you grief if you download heavy amounts of data? I do tend to set my speed at 50% 8am-midnight.

AOL LLU
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Orange LLU (Formerly Wanadoo)

there is also plusnet and tesco in my area but im not sure if they are LLU

Says it all really, stick with sky mate,i have not heard good things about any of the other 3,although i am sure someone here will come along and praise them.
post your router stats, maybe you can fix the issue?

im sure i have done all this, i have been onto sky ages ago, had line checked and changed the microfilter and plugged the cable into the master socket, and from the stats i gave and the distance i am from the exchange folk on here told me what im getting sounds about right, although i know i was getting higher speeds, when i told them at sky what download speed i used to get they tell me i cant get any more than i have.

im happy to post my router stats if you wanna have a look, what info do you need?

ok ill post stuff i posted on sky user forums 2 years ago, i assume i cant link to it.

note i was getting 480kb/s at one point and now i get 320kb/s

i used to get a good download speed or around 480k using newsleecher and my astraweb account, it gradually got slower down to 320k, i thought it might be a temporary thing but after a few weeks my download speed is still low as 320k.

i am getting a speed test of 2.6mb on 2 sites and its the same with my firewall off.

if i try and use Test Result i get a test error at the first stage

i have rbooted the router and reset it, i have also tried tcpoptimizer but no improvements.

any suggestions what i can do next guys

i called sky, i got some indian guy, i dont know if this was an indian call centre or a uk call centre, anyhow i asked what you suggested 'would like your connection reconfigured to give its best speed'

instead he asked me what was wrong and asked me lots of basic questions to trouble shoot the problem, as a result he is sending me out a new microfilter.

i tried another microfilter in the test socket and the noise margin is lower

what can i do now as they dont want to do what i asked and to be honest i trust the advice you are giving me but how do i get them to do what i want ?

new stats
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3067 kbps 797 kbps
Line Attenuation 57 db 34 db
Noise Margin 11 db 12 db

well that was over 30 mins of fun

the numpty that i get thru to has little tech knowlege so to mention 'gamer' 'delay reduced' 'reduce my ping' its all double dutch to him.

the previous numpty never noted anything on the system so back to scratch, i tried to just get put thru to the tech agents but not a chance without him first troubleshooting a problem before he can refer me.

he told me i cant be capped blah blah and asked more questions till i finally got transferred to someone with a bit more knowledge

after explaining what you guys told me and my speed problems he agreed it needs reconfigured but he cant access the software to do this, he could leave me waiting for someone or just process it to be done sometime today, he has no idea how long i would be left waiting so i told him just to process it today sometime.

so now im waiting on the speed going up, im still in the test socket and using the filter that gave me the highest noise margin.

so thanks for all the help and lets hop this will be fixed today

nothing improved with my line so i called up today, got thru to CST, the woman was doing her best to help but she got her supervisor involved as they can get into some other 'screens' anyhow apparently the 'DLM' was still on my line from when something was changed over, whatever that means

im told it should be fixed within 72 hours

i cant remember exactly what the outcome was but i think it ended up with a speed of 380kb/s i never got it back up to 480kb/s

You need to post your current line stats as it changes all the time slightly.

you just need this bit:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3067 kbps 797 kbps
Line Attenuation 54 db 34 db
Noise Margin 11 db 13 db

You can only get the speed your line can offer, switching ISP wont change a thing. If your speed has slowed down there is obviously more noise on the line somewhere.

Sky's target noise margin is 7db downstream, so you'll get no better than that. 60db is fairly high on the line.

Have you tried it plugged directly into the test socket (no extensions or anything, JUST the router)?

ok modem is plugged into microfilter and into the test socket, download speed is the same

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3068 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 60.0 db 35.5 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 10.3 db

Out of the 4 (including Sky) you're probably already with the best so stay with them.

TalkTalk - Crud (current customer).
AOL - Well, the name says it all.
Orange - Same league as TalkTalk.

They're all budget, cheap solutions targeted at the masses.

If you really want a quality connection then go with a more specialist provider such as Zen but be prepared to pay for it.

personally i have been with Orange since they were Freeserve, im paying £10/month for 20mbps, in reality i struggle to break 15mbps - but they dont cap, or throttle or anything and their service is always up - i think they have two days down since ive had them (10+ years i think!)

Get a router that your can manually adjust the noise margin on, if you lower it by a few dB you'll get your old speeds back.

The stats will have changed for a reason though, it's possible that some new electronics in your house/area is (electromagnetically) noisy. Did the speed change coincide with any new purchases?

From your line speeds it sounds like Sky have capped your line at 3072kbps so even if your line can support faster you won't actually get any faster. you need to either catch someone in tier one with access to the system used to reconfigure the line or get someone who can ask someone to reconfigure the line.

when the speeds first dropped i dont remember having bought anything so cant be sure.

i was also told this a couple of years ago by a chap on the sky user forums i tried and tried but i could not get the numpties at sky to let my past first level support and their help was basic. So unless there is some new tactic i can use to get my line reconfigured im pooped. If they are capping it, is it possible for them to remove it? Oh and when i mentioned capping my speed the denied it.

Sky aren't capping it. If your sync speed was any faster then you'd experience a lot more disconnections. There's not really anything at all you can do.

I'm with TalkTalk. They use to be pants years ago, but been with them 18 months, very happy with service. They do seem to be getting better and better, my experience.
