Insurance on an R34 guesstimate?

For me, every time I would look at it I would just think 'It isn't a GTR'.

A modded one will **** you every year in repairs. Someone on here had one and said most garages would not touch his GTR and the repair bills were absolutely insane - I cannot remember the forum username though and think his was a GTR, but I cannot imagine there is much difference in running costs from a GTR to a 400hp GTT.

As others have said, there are other late 90s Nissans out there that are performance turbos.

On a limited mileage specialist insurance policy I wouldn't have thought the differences would have been anything to worry about to be honest. Especially when you're spending £10k and have £250 a month to spend on the car.

I'd be more worried about paying Skyline tax on everything, I reckon that'll eclipse the insurance differences.

Sigma I agree with you totally on the 200sx front. I know parts will be cheaper and that the lighter car with decent suspension will possibly handle better too. Am I really going to notice this in the real world on the road where I'm not aiming to clip apex's on every corner ;) You do need the suspension to be suitably modified however to handle whatever power the car has been upped to.

When I say appeal I simply mean what I think when I look at either a 200sx or an R34. Personally I prefer the looks of the R34, quite like the idea of a smooth inline 6 engine too.

I need to try and get out and have some test drives I guess. In the past I've not had much luck when it comes to that. Only one I ever had at a dealer was in the DC5 which I was toying with at the time and purely went along just for a nosey and the guy simply threw the keys at me and said lets take it for a spin and see what you think!

Are parts for Skylines that much? are we talking M3 prices here?

Also is a tuned Skyline that has been modded properly really going to break down that often? All I seem to have read is that the engines are really rather robust and the GTT can handle up to 400hp with suitable mods.

Right I have to go and sleep now, I'll catch up on any other comments tomorrow morning. Thanks for all of the input, it is all appreciated and generally does stir up a lot of what I have been thinking already but still like that R34 one hell of a lot :D

I know the answer but I'm still confused as to why that R34 is for sale for £30k when the R35 prices are dropping to £40k and some even lower than that!

if you know the answer why are you confused :p

That is a really nice GTR you've posted up MrLOL. Sadly it is out of my budget range :(

mine too sadly :( Bayside blue... Tick :D ... GTR ... Tick :D ... V Spec ... Tick :D ideal spec really.

They have a road presence the new R35 car just can't match.

I don't think it'd be too harsh to drive but then again, it's all down to preference and without driving the cars in question nobody can really be sure which suits him the best.

Er if your looking at a car stacked with.mods and have to ask about insurance rhen i think you might be dissapointed. id really be expecting 2-4k a year for a fairly standard.one. declaring a load of nismo injectors hks kit and the turbo etc they are going to.completely ream you. get a quick quote on confused or call a specialist tomorrow before falling in love with a motor you.might not be able to afford.

confused.com for a car like that ?

forget it. You're best off asking who the current owner is with and getting a quote with them. For a car that higly modified it will be a specialist through a broker as most mainstream insurers (the sort that want to add £100 to your premium for changing your wheels) would run a mile at that mods list.

Yea confused for a quote on a stock one just to see how painful thst could be let alone a specced one like that. im not sure if the op is being quite realistic - get a few quotes then weigh up thd budget and see what happens from there.

Just no.

Confused is going to be completely rubbish on a car like this with mods or without.

I mean you guestimated he'd have a bill of £4k a year as a 33 year old living in a average postcode, you surely don't have much experience in insuring imports, so what are you basing this advice on exactly?

I’ve gone straight to a specialist insurer. There is no point going anywhere near any of the usual mob of insurance companies. With it being an import and modded they would simply laugh in my face. Skyinsurance will be contacting me today at 11.30 with how much it will cost. The only thing going against me is that I have never actually owned a RWD car. Owning the superbikes over the years is a bonus for me and I have had experience driving RWD albeit only in a MK1 escort, BMW 520 and my brothers Nissan 300ZX tt which had been modded slightly. I have already asked the current owner how much they pay for insurance and they pay £695 at the age of 39. I do not know how many of the mods they have declared however. I just showed the pistonheads advert to the insurance company and they will base the quote on that.

That S15 is nice but performance wise it is nowhere near in the same league. My current 306 will be as nippy as that S15!! I’m after an upgrade in both performance and looks not just looks. I am being realistic, if I wasn’t then I’d have shot off and viewed the car, put a deposit down etc before even contemplating getting insurance quotes. I am fully aware the quote may be insanely high and mean that this particular vehicle isn’t within my reach currently. If this is the case I will have to re-evaluate the cars on my list. I know M3’s are insurable at my age though with how cheap some of these are now the claims against them will only rise thus bumping up insurance more :(

Wait i looked into gtr r32 ownership not long ago and went for an import MR2 Turbo instead so infact i have llenty of experience thanks.

who wants a 10k one when the one everybody wants is more like 30k ?

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2917431.htm

you're buying a GTT then. Shame :(

Who wants a £10k Boxster when the one everybody wants (c2/4s) is more like £30k?

Who wants a £30k 911 when the one everybody wants is more like £70k.

In short - what a ridiculous statement.

The GTT doesn't do it for me, it just instantly looks wrong after spending so much time hankering over a GTR as a "yooof" - needs wide arches, y0! That said, I'm sure you could do worse for a RWD Jap Coupé as long as you can find a manual one. It seems like a better idea than an S15 which you are literally just paying for the image, seeing as it's essentially an S14 underneath it all (bar diff and gearbox, I believe?).

Out of your list, I'd have the M3.

Here's my view after owning a R34GTT for 5 years and taking it from Stock import to 500hp GTR-Engined uber beast :D with a world renowned website for R34 owners (now gone sadly).

Insurance - Specialist is pretty much the only way to go I'm afraid. I was 26 when I imported it in Apr 2003 and the insurance (group 20 car) was £1000 back then. Insurance prices have driven up considerably since then and my last quote in Dec 2008 at 32 (still full NCB) was £1200.

Overall Car - Without doubt the GTT has been the most "Fun" car I've ever driven (inc GTR's) but I'm heavily biased as I used mine for Drifting [hipster]Before it became the UKD1[/hipster] and the GTR's I drove didn't like that (attesa went mental).

Engine - Solid as a rock! I started at stock then did the usual Induction/exhaust/1 Bar etc within the 1st few months. Then I decided that 400hp was the way forward so got Rod Bell to stick a GReedy turbo ii with an FMIC, Apexi PowerFC etc. I ran it like this for about 1 1/2 years before I broke it by fitting an Oil Cooler incorrectly (pipe blew off while driving). Instead of a simple rebuild (I felt 400hp on a GTT RB25 lacked enough torque) I wanted to do something unique and had a RB26DETT fitted (1st in UK) by Rising Sun Performance. I had this modded to run 450hp daily with a 500hp Overboost facility. It ran like that for about 3 years before I sold it. It never went wrong (apart from Me) but because I drove it hard it did get serviced (well Oil change and a quick look at) every 3 months regardless.

Looks - I never liked the standard GTT look, it was too "Normal" LOL. I had already got a mental pic in my head of what I wanted (GTR-ish looks but not the GTR's fat bum). I tried GTR alloys but took them off (didn't match the slimmer car). Until I got a FMIC and Top Secret bumper the cars front just looked empty. Once I'd finished (about 6 months after buying it) I never altered anything external as it was perfect for me. Oh and as the car was Black I had lots of genuine CF added which belnded it amazingly well.

Running costs -Not too bad. Mine never cost me any "repair" money until my own stupidity broke it. The money came from Modding which cost me well in excess of £20,000 over 5 years. After that it was petrol, I was using 3-4 50L tanks a month (8-15MPG - I drove it hard remember) and aren't sure I could justify that now. An oil service was £75 every 3 months and big service every year was £500-800. However, when I imported it the 1st service was about £1200 as I had every fluid, belt, plu, coil pack etc replaced which *may* have helped keep the running cost down through the rest of it's time with me.

Overall - Amazing cars if looked after. If you spend a bit of money straight after buying one on a good service then they are very reliable but know it's limits and don't exceed them so 1bar MAX on a standard turbo etc, let it cool down properly after a run (last mile of a journey no boost, low revs rather than sat still on a turbo timer).

Hope that helps - The one you're looking at loks like it was done properly (ie it's the sort of spec I had) and was done by Abbey who know their stuff so as long as it's been cared for there should be no issues (although I'd still get it looked at by Rising Sun who are closer to you than Abbey)

Here's my R34 pics/Vids etc - Got it featured in Banzai too - sorry about the root directory website.
