I think it's everything to do with competition. I had the choice of several service providers to get to Hull the other week.

Really what service providers could you choose from? Why did you choose who you eventually went with? I have no choice which TOC I can use to commute to work, which TOC I can use to get into the West End, which TOC I can use to get into The City, which TOC I can use to go visit my parents.

The only reason fewer trains are late these days is because the rail regulator fines TOCs if they have too many late trains.

I read the Sun today, you can tell they are towing the party line. They have the "It was the most humble moment of my life". The pie man was a nutter(maybe he was but surely, thats one step away from, what they really wanted to say, the evil, murdering, rapist baby killing person that attacked our poor benevolent benefactor).

He responded candidly and answered their questions really well, and even had a little bit of a joke with his mates.

That sums up the Sun up, "please forgive us we wont do it again, or if we do we'll make sure we wont get caught and make sure its those stupid celebs."

I have a choice of South West Trains or First Great Western to get to London with, both different sides of London which is handy.

Hull trains, GNER and Eastern Rail.

TOC? Speak English man.

Privatisation of British Rail improved the UKs rail network, at least for passengers. I cannot fathom how you are even attempting to debate that.

I imagine he never commuted on the old public owned British Rail, he can't have.

How old are you scorza?

Labour are a joke in the Commons so far. Every question relates to Andy Coulson - is that all they have to add to the debate?

I'm fed up with the lot of them. A primary school class could hold a discussion in a more dignified manner. Cameron is so smug it actually hurts and Miliband looks like he was molded out of plasticine by Aardman animations.

Yeah but presumably your final destination is the determining factor of which one you choose, not anything the TOCs can influence. I dunno about FGW but a lot of SWT trains are in poor nick, but would a significant population choose FGW over SWT for that reason?

Fair enough - I thought GNER no longer existed though? Which one did you choose?

TOC=Train Operating Company.

I don't dispute that UK rail has improved since privatisation, just that privatisation was the sole, or even the main reason.

Hacking updates: David Cameron says sorry for Andy Coulson furore

Prime Minister David Cameron said today he was "extremely sorry" about the furore caused by his decision to appoint Andy Coulson as his communications chief.

The former News of the World editor resigned his position at No 10 as the phone-hacking row intensified and has subsequently been arrested by police investigating the scandal.

Mr Cameron said he had an "old-fashioned view about 'innocent until proven guilty'" but said with hindsight he would not have appointed Mr Coulson.

In an emergency statement to the Commons, he said: "It was my decision, I take responsibility."

He continued: "People will, of course, make judgments about it. Of course, I regret and I am extremely sorry for the furore it has caused.

"With 20-20 hindsight and all that has followed, I would not have offered him the job and I expect that he wouldn't have taken it.
"But you don't make decisions in hindsight, you make them in the present.

"You live and you learn and, believe you me, I have learnt."

Mr Cameron also insisted his staff had behaved "entirely properly" in declining a briefing on the police investigation into hacking....

Yet another shift in his position. David Cameron defended himself initially by giving Mr Coulson a "Second chance" - as if Westminster was a rehabilitation centre for fallen or disgraced editors - and at the time dismissed the need for an inquiry to now announcing a judge led investigation; from describing Coulson as a friend to now saying he should be prosecuted if it turned out he had lied.

Given the now quite serious rifts in the Conservative ranks, some still smarting from the expenses and others still unhappy about about the Coalition, this latest 'hic up' has exasperated many of them even further.

I'm still not sure this is resignation material yet, but with enquiries, investigations and most probably trials ahead there is certainly the potential for further revelations, more embarrassement and deep and lasting damage.

One conservative back bencher was said to have described the current situation as 'water lapping around Cameron's feet'... this is not good for a government programme of 5 years, barely a year in.

5-6 isn't that the time you leave nursery? :o

So presumably wouldn't get nursery milk any more >.<

You start primary school at 4-5 :p

I started at 4 (August birthday) and had milk in school until I was 8 I think it was. Even then it was because the policy was abolished, not because I was too old!

What I find hard to believe is that Murdoch new so little about what went on at NOTW. You don't get to his position without knowing every granular detail about your companies.

Though you are right that many TOCs have a monopoly on the line they operate, they do have to bid for the contract in the first place and bid to keep it once their franchise period ends, which is an incentive to provide good service (although, given the fairly short contract lengths, not a great encourager of investment).
