Rumor: Windows 8 to play Xbox 360 games

-
But from what i read its not that games can be played on pc just that mp might be more cross platform and windows live will be integrated into win 8 as standard or somit.

this, something microsoft said has been taken completly out of context. it looks more like MP games will be cross compatible in the future, and that they are merging the GFWL and the Xbox store.

Let me get some facts straight.

The majority of wannabe console gamers already own a console. There isn't many Xbox 360 exclusives that would sway a PS3 gamer to Xbox gaming and apart from Xbox Live, there isn't much into it.

Selling consoles does not generate significant profits. In fact, the first consoles were sold at cost, not sure if this is still the case though.

It's console games that generate profits, it's a huge market and if Microsoft could integrate PC and Xbox 360 gaming, it could quite possibly be a huge commercial success.

The only problem is that Xbox 360 games do not feature anywhere near the quality experience that you get from PC gaming and you won't be able to bypass the limitations on PC if you play an Xbox 360 game. On the other hand, the common API used should allow to minimise compatibility problems.

Most console gamers would still prefer to play on a big screen whilst relaxing on a couch therefore this move would only expand Microsoft's market to the new niche.

There is another thing to it, the cost of a gaming PC that will play Xbox 360 games with providing the same experience will be at least triple that of the Xbox 360 therefore nobody would decide to buy a PC over the Xbox 360 for console gaming.

Laptop owners are an irrelevant group because they wouldn't be able to play these games anyway.

I for one would be very happy to play some of the consoles exclusives on my PC.

This was actually posted a while back ;) I know you searched though :)

There is a massive difference between a console game being ported over to the PC, than taking an XBOX disk, and running an XBOX emulator on your PC. It's hard enough to emulate the PS2 on PCs, let alone emulation of an XBOX. Unless of course, it's hardware emulation. But do you really think people will pay for that? It will cost more than it does to buy an actual XBOX. I remember the original 60GB PlayStation 3 had hardware emulation for the PS2 and PS1 built in, and I'm pretty sure it was removed because of the cost!

wouldn't it be better (for microsoft) the other way round...windows 8 can run on xbox 360 or the next console they come out with? so instead of people buying pcs from ocuk or whoever then they would buy a microsoft "pc" xbox. You could then have microsoft xbox laptops or tablets.

Windows 7 voice recognition is really good...a little more work and voice, touch and motion will be an easy option for pc control and wireless screens would mean "xbox" could stay in living room whilst you work at your desk in your office.

just thinking aloud...ignore me

Shhhhh you'll give them ideas.

I'm pretty sure this is the exact same "story" that was debunked and ridiculed weeks ago.

Development complexity aside... Why would Microsoft make a decision that would make them loose out on potential hardware sales?

Seriously people, rather than reading the end of the Chinese whispers of article referencing article, lets go back to the original source of all this. :)

When I wrote this article, I didn’t expect much buzz other than a few Tweets or Facebook mentions, but a few weeks later, I’m getting sourced by CNet, Gamespot and even Japanese blogs. This article has pretty much gone viral and although I’m all for the spread of information, I have to also inform you that this article is 100% speculation.

The rumor of Windows 8 supporting Xbox games originated from Insideris. I didn’t source my article from them simply because there wasn’t really much to link, they too did not have a source (although they claim to have one, who knows?) and both of the articles are speculation.

Although I made the claim that you can simply place an Xbox360 disk into your DVD tray and play, I have no sources to back this information; it’s just purely a logical theory. This theory came to life simply because Microsoft is out to gain profits and the most profitable way to let PC users play Xbox360 games is to simply let them put the game inside their DVD tray and play. Whether there’s software integrated in Windows 8 that lets you do so, or the requirement to download programs via WindowsLive, I don’t know, but it’s the most logical theory when you think about it.

Like any other article on the internet that has radical information, a sense of skepticism is needed. If this turns out to be true, this site’s [Teknylate] credibility is reinsured, but if this turns out to be false, then I guess you can call it, ‘one of those sites.’

It's not even a rumour. Somebody's thought "wow that would be awesome" and posted about it.

Who owns a console but not a PC? A laptop at the very least?

Probably more than a half of the console gamers.

More than half? Citation required.

'Cause that's utter bullpoop. Made me spit my drink out actually.

Most people don't have PCs with the capability of running those games.

Really?

512MB RAM?
ATi Radeon X1900/X1950?

Hell AMD just put more graphics capability on the same die as a quadcore CPU (See Llano).

The only thing most people will fall down on is the Tricore 3.2GHz processor but I bet a lot of games don't require that power.

Maybe im geting this wrong, but surely this would be good for Microsoft. People will continue playing thier games and using the Microsoft platform. Also, MS may introduce some kind of client for playing the games, which is either tied to a XBL account or is a pay for service, plus the games may need a PC license, which MS will charge for.

The Xbox 720 is coming, but MS want to milk these consoles for as much as they can, plus, dropping 360 support on the 720 and slamming 360 support onto Windows 8 would be genious, Xbox 720 sale + Windows 8 sale + game sales = $$$$$

I didnt think the money was in the consoles, its in the games and software, if thats the case, MS have all the potential to make billions.

I can't believe anyone would believe this for a second. The only way it might happen is if they released the new xbox then made the old ones work on Windows 8.
