hello ive started using my i pad 2 via the phone tethering what phone company offers the best support on this front i am currently with tesco but they dont support tethering so im looking into the o2 option which looks to be around 3 quid a month ontop of your existing contract which looks like it starts at around 15 quid a month for so many minutes 500 i think with 256 mb free data

Are you tethering from an android phone or iPhone? As if android it's free and included in your data allowance.

Not iPhone im android pay as u go @ moment with tesco looking for a good provider probably O2 that supports tethering and Internet been told to avoid 3

I don't understand why this would ever not be free? Why do apple charge for this? It's using your data allowance:confused:

It's not apple who are charging me it's tesco mobile who currently don't support tethering yet.why would apple cost me don't have a contract with them
I have to use the 3G which says increases battery power and increases data usage and have to use a packet service when using a mobile app this I assume is how the provider knows I'm using data for tethering?

I don't get it. The computer is just 'borrowing' the phones signal isnt it? How can the provider not support it?

They do support it - but the iPhone flags it so the network provider can easily see if its tethered or not. Then the network can charge you more for it as a premium service.

OP this is from o2 (pay monthly customers) The others will probably be the same.

If your phone is compatible, all our data Bolt Ons will let you tether. We won't charge you anything extra, but we'll take any data you use out of your data allowance.

Don't have I phone although that might not be such a bad thing as they have jail break which allows you to tether without increased charges

Where did you find that from? Ive got a SIM free iP4 on a TMobile SIMO plan with the 3GB allowance and it has the tethering option and I use it regularly during a normal month. Didnt need to enable anything or call TMobile either - just works out of the box like an Android phone...

It was my impression that the some network provided iPhones though have this feature disabled so they have to deal with the network to unlock that and at the same time pay a surcharge for the tethering service - I know O2 did this when they still had the exclusive but I expect all the other providers do on specific iPhone tariffs.

Id be very interested to see if the iPhone does announce that its tethered back to the network, rather than my assumption that its quite obvious from either the bandwidth used or the type of content the phone is downloading etc. Anyway its one large reason why I buy SIM free phones now so networks dont have the ability to manage such services to ensure additional revenue...
