What do you experts think of these phone photos?

Do you think these are good, they're from my samsung galaxy S2 phone, 8 MP camera, macro mode, 3264 x 2448 res highest phone res, everything auto.

I assume you mean image quality and not photographic artistry ? lol, yes the quality is great more than enough for taking a photo :)

There's amazing artistry in those pics! :D

I just thought you chaps might be interested because I'm really amazed how good phone cameras are these days.

I'm actually thinking of getting that phone when my contract for this POS iphone expires. Unless there's something better out by then of course :)

Any low light pics? That's where phone cameras really need to improve! No one cares if I can take a 10mp picture if there's no detail and it's noisy!

How low light are we talking? I took this the other day on the phone, would this be low light?

You're going to be waiting a while for decent low light capability in phones given the ridiculous obsessions with megapixels and the tiny sensors. Even something reasonable like a 2MP sensor would be very hard to get decent noise performance out of. It would take a huge effort on the part of the manufacturer to advertise that and convince the phone buying community that in fact, megapixels mean less than nothing for IQ.

Just took this, auto everything. Not great really. Sky looks quite nice though :p

And full of noise unfortunately :(

It would be nice if a phone could compete with a DSLR or the such like, but it's unlikely to ever happen... hence the price of DSLR's...

You're getting close to Digital Camera quality, but as already said the sensors just aren't big enough, so you won't get the best night time photography (or concert/gig photography unfortunately!).

I've always struggled to get the light right in pictures taken from phones (before my HTC Desire (current phone) I had a long list of the latest Sony Ericson Camera specific phones). Now that probably is in part down to me, but I think it is a general issue across Mobile Phone Camera's to be honest :s

As for the everyday standard picture though these are perfectly adequate for most people :)

You're getting close to Digital Camera quality,

As in DSLR or as in cheap point and shoot cameras like a £60 fujifilm finepix 14MP for example? Looking at the macro of those pics in my first post, surely the average 60 to £100 point and shoot compact camera wouldn't produce better quality would it?

compromises...my current phone isn't quick enough in use to take some photo's whilst the wife's Fuji (FD45) is plenty fast enough. But, sometimes you just pull the phone out of your pocket...

Phone cameras are only just barely catching up to compact cameras. There's not a chance in hell any camera phone on the market right now is even close to DSLR quality. I don't even think we will get there in 10 years time. Even micro four thirds cameras (which are the next step down from DSLR cameras with APS-C sensors) like the Panasonic GF cameras are pretty thick and bulky compared to phones.

Most of the photos taken in the first post look like they were taken in a nice bright room with lots of light, so getting decent looking images in that situation isn't really hard. Any camera can look decent with enough light.

They're getting closer to compacts, but you can get a lot camera for £80 now.

To give you an idea of how it compares I've just taken 2 very quick snaps and resized them to around 8mp. Compare these to 100% crops from the SGSII and you'll see just how far behind they are, and that's without even mentioning dynamic range, focus speed, f/stop, high ISO etc.

Technically we should never get there.

However you cut it a bigger sensor will always be better :p

It really is stunning how a 8.5mm thick phone can take pics like that.

Here's a good blog comparing the Nokia N8 to a Canon 550D + kit lens for general P&S pics.

Edit:
Obviously the major benefit of a P&S is usually the zoom lens but camera phones have been using P&S sensors for a while now. The N86/Satio/Pixon all had a 1/2.5″ sensors while the N8 ramped it up to 1/1.83", this is getting close to bridge compacts like the S95. Unfortunately the camera/lens module is too thick for today's anorexic phones :p Gsmarena did a N8 'blind test' with a Sony DSC-HX5v for those interested.

Best bit of that entire article is what some guy put at the end which is obviously a typo, yet hilarious none the less!

Wow.. I am shocked. The N8 even beats the Canon is come shots, I could never imagine that. Thanks for the awesome test!! Now I can’t wait for it to go on sale in India.

Used mine several times while I've been away, very impressed with it as a camera. Here was a quick shot of Crantock beach about 9pm one night. All auto, didn't bother playing with the settings yet.
