Hi,

My Tpower mother board decided to die on my this week.
I'm looking to replace it with something not too expensive.

Am I right in thinking I have to get a x58 spec'd board?

I found

Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H Intel H55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 microATX Motherboard @ £66.98 inc VAT

which lists support for i7 and it's FAR cheaper than anything i can find for my i7 - did they change the socket type, or is it backwards compatible?

------>

I would like a mobo which has:
6 RAM slots is a must.
4+ SATA ports
1 at least SATA 6GB (as will get an ssd soon)
usb 3.0

has good reviews.

any thoughts or advice? wont be going crazy with an OC maybe 3.4 to 3.6 from my i7-920 as I got before.

Might pay a little more if it had a high quality sound card, might decide to get an after market expansion bay card.

Thanks!
A

The motherboard you have listed is for socket 1156, the i7 920 you have is socket 1366 so that's a no go I'm afraid. I have the same CPU as you running in one of these

It has all the features you're after and allow you to hit 4Ghz with that chip so long as you have sufficient cooling :)

There is a slightly cheaper board, but I'm not sure if it has all the features you're after.

Remember that any SATA 3 (6Gbps) ports on an X58 motherboard will be an add on controller from someone like Marvell as X58 doesn't support SATA 3 ports.

The Marvell ports are unlikely to perform as well as native SATA 3 ports.

That is the understatement of the year, they perform rubbish, especially with SSDs. I purchased an X58 board specifically for them and found that with Raid 0 C300s (which are proper SATA 3 SSDs) the Intel SATA 2 controller gave better performance than the Marvell SATA 3 controller!
